Default New and needy !!

Hi you all. I drive a 1996 XJR. I live on 65 acres in Virginia close to Charlottesville (home of UVA - I went to Va Tech though). I grow figs.
My Jag has 90k miles on it and all in all it's been a great car but things are beginning to fail.
My current MAIN issue is my oil gauge goes off and on and when it goes off the oil idiot light comes on. I had to drive 20 miles 2 days ago and the gauge went off and light came on several times for about a mile or so during this drive. This is new and I'm hoping it's a sender unit issue but I am not much off a mechanic. I did restore 2 Austin Healey 3000s in my youth but that was a good 40 years ago. My health (too many injuries -) makes working on my car a tad iffy. I intend to change the oil.
Can anyone tell me what the chances are that this is a serious issue?
I'm hoping I can get the sender unit replaced and that will do it. Am I fooling myself?
Also did I post this properly? Any advise would be appreciated.
Am I missing anything that will help me fit in here?

Always excited to welcome a fellow Virginian. I live just over the mountain from you!

I'm not terribly mechanical myself, so I won't even attempt to diagnose your problem, but it doesn't sound horribly severe; I'm sure you'll find the advice you need here. The forum is divided in to sections for individual models so re-posting your question in the the X300 forum will put you in contact with members who drive the same era car as yours and who will be the most likely to be able to assist you. If you don't care to do that, one of the moderators will probably move it there for you.

By the way, there's a good independent Jaguar shop in Waynesboro if you don't already have someone to do your repairs.

Welcome.

The X300 section is theTech Section for youyr car.

The oil sender is a COMMON issue with the X300.

That AJ16 engine is TOUGH, and has very few issues.

Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums.

Sixty five acres growing figs in Virginia - sounds idyllic but I'll bet it's still hard work.

The most likely cause of the oil pressure issue is a faulty transducer (sender unit) although it could be a sticking bypass valve. The idiot light is effectively zero pressure and it doesn't take long like that to seize an engine so your recent drive suggests it's unlikely to be a failed pump.

Hi!

Sorry for the delay - I was never on the computer yesterday, so missed your request. The shop I was referring to is European Auto Sport - it is located at 4593 Stuarts Draft Highway (which is U.S. 340) Tel. 540-943-5889. The owner is Mark Mitchell and he has been working on Jaguars for decades. His assistant is a mechanic named Bill Brown, with whom I graduated from high school. Because my current Jaguar has always been under full warranty during my ownership, they have not worked on it but they did successfully take care of the Rolls-Royce I owned prior to my purchase of the XJL. They are good guys, know what they're doing, and are reasonably priced. My experience with them has been excellent.

thx.
I talked to a place called Gassman and they seemed OK. They certainly have an interesting inventory of cars to sell.
They also have the first Austin Healey 100/4 made. I will call the shop you recommend tomorrow. I ordered an oil sender unit as I'm hoping that's the problem.
If you ever decide you want fig trees I have 275 varieties.

I've never used Gassman - locals tell me that they tend to be difficult to work with, but I can't confirm or refute that. All I know is that Mark and Bill at European Auto Sport have certainly treated me fairly and I've been very pleased with their work. Good luck!

I will say this - Mark is willing to be flexible and get me in on my time and get me back out. Gassman wants me to drop it off and wait a couple weeks until they "get around to it" -- seriously.
