Default New owner and Frustrated

I just bought a 1995 XJ6 and am feeling lost. I've always thought of myself as pretty mechanically inclined until I tried to tackle the rear Shocks on this car. No matter what I do I just cant seem to remove the shock from the car. I Jacked up the the rear of the car and have it on jack stand on the rear subframe I have removed the Damper Bolt and the four nuts holding up the mount assembly. I used a spring clamp to crank down on the spring but can't seem to be able to tighten it enough to be able to remove it from the car. What am I missing? I know there is something I'm not doing but I just can't seem to figure it out any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
