We strolled over and saw the x-type. It was less than a year old and was available for a great price. So we ended up trading in the Subaru for the x type!
It was a little strange to have 2 cars that are considered to be close competitors at the same time. But it did give us a great opportunity to compare the 2 in a way many reviewers can't.
In the end, it comes down to passion. The x type (whether it is a real jag or not) has passion. From the start of the engine to the seats to the styling to the way it drives to the clunk of the door...it definately has a personality. You either love it or hate it. I love it! The C280 is very much like the Acura TL - very refined, very well mannered cars, but very bland as well. There are days when driving in the jag brings a smile to your face, and days when you want to curse it....with the others it's always just a car
I guess it's hard to describe, but what makes a jag a jag is not just the parts and pieces. It's something more. To me, the x type is a beautiful car. It never bothered me one bit that it was based on a Ford Mondeo. Isn't the Audi A4 based on a VW Passat? or an Acura TL based on a Honda Accord? No one seems to bring that up? I guess one advantage of being built on a Mondeo platform was that the x type was pretty reliable. The cost of maintence on the the x type is the same if not lower than the C280 and TL. The C280 has a tendency to turn on warning lights that need repair at the dealer at the drop of a hat!

Greetings...
I agree with your sentiments on the fact that the Jaguar invokes passion and the European and Japenese competition are so refined that they are sterile. I have never had a desire to own a Japanese car for that very reason. The Audi, MB, and BMW's have begun to look and feel more and more like the Japanese competition much to their detriment, IMHO.
From everything I have seen of the XF, it will be an excellent car.
Best of luck.

Aluni, welcome to the club. If you ever need anything and are looking for a drive, come an hour south to southern Maryland. I am down here and am sure that whatever problem you have, we can atleast get you going in the right direction, if not getting you fixed. I am considering doing a get together up in DC later on this summer. I am also trying to get some people together for a show down in Richmond, VA called the Concours d'Elegance. It is a car show dedicated just to Jags. Great show.
Welcome to the club and should you need any help, let me know. I'm always willing to turn a wrench or two.
