Hi, new user here, Jon from Finland. I bought this 1990 XJ40 2.9l last august after dreaming of XJ40 for about 13 years
This is RHD originally from UK and imported to Finland in 2006. It has the smaller 2.9 engine and automatic transmission. I heard that this is quite rare as it has the older 2.9 engine but still the newer instrument cluster (not the digital one).
It has only about 74 000 miles on it at the moment and here in Finland the previous owners has not driven it much and it has been also sitting in barn for 6 years on one of the owners. Here in Finland it has been driven only at summer time. i also has other car for daily driver and I drive this about 1 time a week. It got the museum register on 2020 and it means here in Finland that there are no taxes to pay, insurance is very cheap and the car should be driven max 30 days per year. Also the inspection/MOT interval is long; 4 years as it is normally every year here.
I would say that this was quite cheap if You look other XJ40s sold here in Finland. I paid 4300€ for it. At first glance it looks like mint condition but there are some issues/problems, som of those I already fixed last winter when the car was sitting in my garage. Some rust spots here and there and electrical problems. The head lining is in poor condition but some of the previous owners has tried to fix it with glue. Some problems with central locking.
I had a 1989 XJ40 2.9. It was a rare variant. The smaller engine put the vehicle into a lower company car tax band but the regulations soon changed and the model was then discontinued. A particular weakness on the 2.9 engine was the upper timing chain tensioner which is unusually large and tended to crack across the centre. Fortunately failure usually only creates noise and not the valve and piston damage common with the same failure on a V8.
I can see you've already found your way to the XJ40 forum so there's no need for a link to it from me. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for information on regular issues.
