Cool New XJ40 owner

Good evening!
A bit of an intro, I suppose. I've been driving and maintaining 'old cars' as my primary hobby for as long as I've been driving, which is about 14 years now. Unlike many people who make this their hobby, I very rarely sell a car - I generally buy, fix, drive, then park it for a couple years while I repeat the cycle with another car. At some point I wander back into one of the cars that has been sitting, catch up on its needs, and drive it for a while. Rinse, repeat.

I'm presently sitting at 7 assorted domestic vehicles, six Ford and one Chrysler, between the model years of 1983 and 1991. All of these vehicles are imperfect but in mostly decent shape, for being driven as they are. Between these vehicles, I've worked on most of the things it's possible to work on as a "home gamer", and even a little more - I've replaced a handful of parts inside the Acclaim transmission, for example, but I'd hardly say I rebuilt it. I'd say my blind spots/areas lacking confidence or experience are mainly body work (and one of the vehicles is to be a project in this area when I get to it), engine internals, and setting up differential gears.

Now, as you might gather from me being here, I've bought something new and unfamiliar. I've always liked the looks of all of the XJ cars, in all of its iterations, so when the opportunity to pick up an affordable and good condition 1992 Sovereign came along, I couldn't help myself - despite it not running at the time I handed the cash over. Ironically, for my interest having been largely based on liking the XJ looks, I've managed to buy the variant with the worst looking headlights, in my opinion...but I'll survive.

I must admit, my "blind spots" are much bigger on this than what I typically wrench on, but I see it as a challenge and an opportunity to learn more.

I'll be posting in the XJ40 forum when I find stumbling points, I'm sure. It doesn't look like it's necessarily common for people to make a thread detailing their car overall here - what might be called a "build thread" or "reader's ride" thread on other sites, along the lines of a blog - I'd be inclined to do that otherwise but I'm not seeing an obvious place where that would go. Maybe just in XJ40 directly.

Regardless, looking forward to participating here and learning more about the car.

Welcome Kishy,
That looks like a really nice car. I had the same thoughts about the "fishtank" headlights on my 92 at first (17 years ago) because I thought Jaguar saloons should have 4 rounds. But after some time i realized that since this is a totally different car than the series xj's- It is much more squared off and angular- that the 4 rounds wouldnt really be the best choice. Considering it that way, it really makes sense -at least to me. By the way, I have got a line on an 88 xj40 which has the 4 rounds and at this point, I dont think I like it as much. We will see if they grow on me as well....

Thanks for the welcome, all.
I'm pretty sure I'll come to appreciate it as a great car (if indeed it is), but it remains to be seen how well it hits my 'checklist' for what makes me love a car.

This is far and away my favourite at present - the one I always come back to, which always puts a smile on my face, despite its faults.

For its similarities to the Jag, they couldn't be more different. A different class of car marketed to a different group of buyers. We'll have to see how my first toe-dip into this sort of premium car affects what I value. I believe the hydraulic suspension is still present and is broken, which may have a bit of a dampening effect on my enthusiasm for a while.

As for the headlamps, if swapping to the lower trim XJ6 quad lamps is relatively trivial, I may look at picking up a set of the lamps and their bezels. Certainly I'd hang onto the rectangular ones, but you've gotta love how your car looks when you turn back walking away after parking it, and I don't know that this look will grow on me.
