Question Newbie from Netherlands with questions about XJ

Hello good people!

I'm on the fence for an XJ of roughly ten years old. This'll be my first Jag.

I've done some homework and I've learnt about Nikasil problems and chain tensioners, and I'll be alert. But I would appreciate any kind of advice about things to look out for when buying a 308 from 1999 or 2000 or so. Are there any easy checks to do when looking at a car or things to listen for?

I DO have two specific questions:

- 3.2 or 4.0 engine?
I've read that the 4.0 does not really consume more fuel than a 3.2. Is that true? And are there any other differences between the two engines?

- Sovereign, Executive, Luxury?
What exactly is the difference between these versions? I tried my best online, but I'm having a hard time figuring this out...

Welcome to the forum subsonic, for answers to your specific questions you need to ask them over in the XJ8/XJR forum.

And, why not also have a read of the FAQ for that forum.

One thing I have noticed is that quite a few of the Nikasil cars have had later engine replacements, that would be something to look for, and the seller should be able to prove that one.

Welcome,
I agree with Translator .Plus make sure timing chains are replaced with the metal ones , those factory ones were crispy and caused many problems

You really do need to see some evidence of regular servicing, and more than just stamps in the Service Book.

Condition of car is paramount at this age, (10 years), so if the right car comes along, the trim level is irrelevant; mechanicals are all the same.
