Default Newbie in New Hampshire

Hi, my name is Tom, and I have a British car problem.

(Hi, Tom.)

To the MGB GT, MGC GT, and Riley, I have now added a Series I XJ6. An MGB, another MGC GT, and a Rover P5 have come and gone before.

Anyhow, the car looks really solid and is in great condition, minus some basic sorting needs, and I'm quite happy. You'll be certain to see me around asking questions!

Tom

Welcome to the forum Tom,

Looks like a very good problem to have.

Follow Norri's link to the XJ6 tech section for help, advice and information. The 'HOW TO' threads at the top of each are a good place to start for info on regular issues.

Remember to add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.

Enjoy the forum.

Thanks for the welcome, guys. Just got done going through the thick stack of receipts going back to the second owner, in 1973 (he traded a '67 Rover TC for it!). It's interesting reading, as I have always had to guess about my cars' histories until now, and I always err on the side of low mileage and exquisite care when concocting a mental history for my car (it seems I'm a little biased that way).

This one turned 100,000 miles in 1994 or so, and reads 37,000 or so as of now, but the speedometer is reading way too fast. I wonder why, and for how long. Sounds like it's time for a post in the technical section!

Tom,

Good to get a file of bills from the PO. I always like all the history I can get on my vehicles.

Dragging this from the depths of memory - it's been a lot of years since I had a Series I. Lookout for information or do a search on the angle drive for the speedo. I think there was a difference in the number of teeth on the cog for XJ6 and XJ12 which could account for the incorrect reading if this has been replaced during a transmission overhaul.

Graham: excellent information. If there is enough slack (and I doubt that there is), I will attach the cable to the trans directly and see if the reading changes.

I found this thread on E-Type UK that seems to confirm what you are talking about. Quite interesting, as I would never have even dreamed that an angle drive would be anything other than 1:1!

Tom,

Reading the E-Type thread, it's looking like a possible explanation for your speedometer being too fast. I can only think the difference in drives was to allow for matching the various differential ratio options.

Guys in the XJ6 Series I, II & II section will have further and more up-to-date information on this than me.

Graham
