Welcome to the forums John,
I've copied your question to XJ40 forum for advice from members with the same model. Here's the direct link to it:

Follow this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xj40-xj81-25/ to the main XJ40 forum for help, advice and information. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for information on regular issues. Welcome to the Forums.
NOT doubting Graham's directions for help. but I notice you mention the "mechanic drained the" tanks", which I took to be 2 tanks, one each side??
This would make your car a Series 3, a very late one, and the year is a cross over, well down here it is, not sure on the USA market.
Maybe the Series 1/2/3 Tech section will be suited.
Good luck.

John,
Don B noticed my mistake and moved your question from XJ40 to XJ6 Series I, II & III forum. Here's the direct link to it:
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...return-237928/
We got the XJ40 a year earlier in the UK than you did in the USA.
