Default Not Quite There Yet

I understand that an intro is really important, but I'm not quite there yet. That is to say, I've started the search for the XJS I've wanted since, oh, I don't know, let's just say the Reagan Years and leave it at that. I've started the search, and there are many possibilities out there, but I can't exactly add anything to the signature block yet.

While I'm new to Jags, I do have some experience working on older 911s, so while all those hoses in the engine bay are a little intimidating, I'm ready to learn.

Once I find my car, I'm looking for a tourer that's not quite as rough as a 911, but capable. Think of it as the car Jag would have made if they had more free rein. Tighter suspension, maybe lighter... certainly a third pedal as part of a way to shift gears all on my own. To continue the Porsche analogy, more like a 928.

So you'll probably see a lot of questions relating to suspension bushings and shocks, good ways of increasing horsepower a bit, and definitely transmission advice.

One up front concern is tires. Expect to see questions on rim sizes and offsets. Actually, it's not that I mind 15 inch tires, it's mostly that the correct size is becoming rare. A bump to 17 inch seems reasonable.

I am of course interested in learning about other classified ads than this site, autotrader and hemmings, if someone knows of them.

One final question, or perhaps a suggestion if what I'm looking for does not yet exist. What we are really discussing is spending quite a bit of money on essentially a 20 to 40 year old used car. Finding one just down the street is not likely unless you live someplace like Southern California or perhaps NYC (at least that's where I've seen most of the ads). A pre-purchase inspection is an absolute must. Is there a directory of knowledgeable techs who are willing and capable (of course, for a fee) of providing an unbiased PPI? Yes, one can search on "need PPI in San Diego", or whatever, but a directory may lead you to places the search might miss. That seems like it would be a useful tool.

Thanks in advance, and really looking forward to the ride!

Welcome to the forum Edelweiss,

Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums.

You don't give a location but I think you are in Texas? It is always worth travelling to find the right used Jaguar and Californian cars don't have the rust issues that can plague the XJS.

Follow this link XJS ( X27 ) - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the XJS forum for help, advice and information.
The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for info on regular issues.

Enjoy the forums.

Welcome.

The right XJ-S is the right XJ-S, and the time taken now "may" be benificial in some ways, but a hinderence in others.

They are fickle besats now, with so many owners (usually), so many "experts" under that bonnet (for sure), and so on, but they are the ducks guts in Jaguar land, and Suttgart is still on its knees since the 1976 intro.

Am I biased, HELL YES.
