Overheat at Idle - 2006 XJ8 in Georgia
After several false directions to fix my overheat at idle problem, I saw a thread here that the water outlet and thermostat housing had a tendency to crack internally, at the point where the thermostat should seat against the plastic housing. This can't be seen until the thermostat is removed. The whole housing assembly including a new thermostat and sensor was $150 on E-bay and was not too difficult to replace while in my driveway (Jaguar 4.2 V8 Water Outlet & Thermostat Housing S-Type XJ8 XK8 XF AJ811793).This completely solved the problem that I have been worried about for more than a year.
I am attaching a picture to show what this deteriorated housing looks like. This is on a 2006 XJ8 with 72,000 miles.
