Paso Dave Says Hello
As you can see from my signature block we (wife and me but she drives it most of the time) have a 2000 S 4,0 with sport package with 160K miles. An engineer by training but now retired and left the field, currently an innkeeper (Seven Quails Vineyards) to keeps busy, I have found this vehicle, with a few exceptions, sophisticated, well engineered, and a pleasure to drive.
We purchased 7QUAILS (our CA vehicle's vanity plate) 10 years ago. Since then we have added 130K miles to the total. Along the way we had a transmission rebuild (at about 120K miles), replaced all four window mechanisms (poor design and use of plastics), replaced the plastic radiator expansion tank, and had the front steering assemblies re-torqued. For this last item there is a safety notice calling for a check of the ball joint torque setting which should be 65 ft-lbs. Ours needed tightening. I believe this applies to early SNs of the 2000 S.
Past life has included '52 Chevie 4 door with a straight 8, '68 MB 230 with dual carbs (ugh, tough to balance), a '72 MB 280SE 3.5 with electronic injection (beautiful vehicle, son still has it), a number of nondescript U.S. vehicles, and of course the present 2000 S.
Once our vehicle is washed and suitable for a pic we'll post.
