Default Project xjs

Good morning,

The last few months have been interesting, I've sold up and moved from the UK to New Jersey which meant I had to sell my xk8. Not an easy thing to do due to strong emotional attachment. So after 2 months of not owning a jag I decided to go and get another project. A 1990 xjs v12 coupe. Although it needs everything it does start drive and stop.

The list so far...

Misfire: It has "apparently" been doing this for the Las 2 weeks. The car has been stood for a while with little fuel in it so it could just be bad fuel or crap suck ed up from the bottom of the tank. Will flush the fuel system and fill with 93 octane and see if that helps. If not then the usual spark, fuel, compression route. Next job will be to replace the extra crispy injector fuel lines and while I'm at it I might as well make a new loom.

Interior: Whilst it was advertised as an 8 out of 10 (which I believe was a typo for 0.8/10) half the electrickery doesn't work and the passenger (rhs) door card is missing. The stitching on the drivers seat is coming apart. The wood is knackered. The headlining is stained albeit it's not sagging. The stereo is aftermarket and is also U/S. The carpets haven't been cleaned since the car left coventry.

Exterior:

Ok so the car has a body kit. (I have mixed feelings about that type of thing) and aftermarket alloy wheels. Which although they don't look awful I'd much prefer jag wheels. The body itself has a few corrosion worms eating their way through the car most of it is just surface rust so will be easy to treat. However the is a large hole in the front drivers side wing that if it gets much bigger I'll be able to fit my head through it. Now in a perfect world one would be tempted to replace the panel, but I'd like to keep the car original as possible so looks like I'll fabricate a repair. That or leave it as an inspection window. I'm yet to see the underside of the car so God only knows what's waiting for me under there. So if anyone owns a steel foundry please get in touch as I'm expecting said corrosion worms to be having a complete party under there. One thing I'm looking forward to seeing is that it has quad exhaust tips and I'm wondering if it's just the tips or whether there's an aftermarket system installed.

Other than that it has 83k on the clock and I paid $2000 for it. I don't like to see jags broken for parts so I will do my best to save it as I have a few interesting ideas for the interior

I will upload photos when I can work out how to upload them without just creating links to my phone.

On a side note how was the lower output on the usa v12 achieved? I'm not bothered by it just curious and I didn't want to trawl through Google to find the answer.

Welcome.

I see you have a sense of humour, MANDATORY for XJ-S ownership, particularly the versions with the REAL engine.

You will have fun, AND, never be bored.

Thank you muchly. It's not my first xjs restoration but it is my first v12 which will probably be in bits around my garage by the end of next week.

I agree on that body kit, BUT, if it was fitted a tad better would probably look a whole lot better.

The V12 is STRONG, and internally gives little issues.

Oil pipe o/rings being the #1 to do item.

Which oil pipe? I'll add it to the list. Also any idea where the best place to get a workshop manual as I'm one of those guys that likes to torque as per manufacturers guidelines.

I think the only engine swap I'd be interested in would be the v12 from the AM DB7.
