Hi all,
Thought I should introduce myself and say hi.
I bought my 1989 5.3 XJ-S Convertible in September last year (Solent Blue with Magnolia Leather and a terrible headliner!) and promptly took her on a lengthy road trip to the south of France.
She behaved admirably (aside from a brief fear-inducing rise of the temperature gauge whilst stuck in traffic in Biarritz) and, despite her initial skepticism, my wife now loves the car as much as I do.
My initial plan was to use her as a daily driver (and did so for a couple of months), but after the forth consecutive morning scraping ice from the inside of the windscreen in December, I decided that a cheap runaround for the winter mightn't be a bad idea. Santa Claus brought the Jag a stormforce cover and I've been pootling around in a £300 alfa since January...
Anyway - the sun's shining (and that whiny alfa alternator is far too noisy with the windows down) so I'll be spending the next couple of weeks doing a few little jobs to get the Jag summer-worthy ready to increase the frequency of my petrol station visits

Welcome to the forum Gaz,

Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums. That was a splendid way to get acquainted with your XJS although the fuel bill must have been eye watering. There's nothing I like better than escaping through Eurotunnel.

Follow this link XJS - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the XJS forum for help, advice and information.
The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for info on regular issues.

Please remember to add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.

You can also visit the UK Region forum by following this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/uk-68/
to find other members in this country.

Enjoy the forums.

Thanks for the welcome guys,
The trip was certainly a great way to familiarise ourselves with the car - I bought it on Thursday afternoon, then drove onto the Cherbourg ferry Friday night!
The general concensus from my nearest and dearest was "suicide mission" (25 year old v12 about to do more miles in a fortnight than it'd done in the previous five years...) but we figured there's no better car to drive the atlantic coast... Although I did invest in some European breakdown cover -just in case!
Ohh and the fuel bill was absolutely ruinous - I'm deeply suspicious of the trip computer's alleged "24mpg average"

Any problems with French fuel?

The 10% Ethanol is becoming widespread and 95 octane difficult to find. My XK is compatible with Ethanol content but the XJS could be more temperamental.

Hi Graham,
I didn't want to risk it so (as if fuel wasn't dear enough anyway!) bit the bullet and filled-up with SP98 instead. Expensive, but cheaper than a rebuild...

The US and Canadian XJS owning members should have some useful advice on Ethanol 'enhanced' fuel as they have been plagued with it for much longer than Europe.

If you plan on doing Continental touring, it's only going to get harder to find SP98. We drove down to Gibraltar last June and there was nothing other than E10 available on the Spanish Autoroutes.

Us girls are frequently skeptical when our men show us cars, Gaz, but it it turns out to be the *Right* car, we come around.
Welcome from ElinorB.

Thanks Elinor,
The only slight hitch is that, at a shade over 5 feet tall, my wife can only just reach the pedals - I think she ran out of throttle at about 75!
Incidentally it was Leah that persuaded me to buy the Alfa
