Default reliability of an s-type and older jags in general

i’ve seen a decent amount of say an early 2000s s-types under 6k with low miles. i know this is a jaguar forum, so there might be some bias, but how good are these reliability wise, what are things to look for specific to these jags, and what models to stay away from. i hear people always saying they get to be unreliable after 70-80k miles but i don’t know how true these claims are or not. thanks.

Hello,
Yes, this IS a Jaguar forum and there will be some bias here just like any other Brand Based forum, but that doesn't mean we're either blind or stupid about our cars' reliability.

*Many* comments you hear about how Unreliable Jaguars are come from people who have Never owned one. Not only that, a quick, shallow read of these very forums might give the impression these cars are Always broken down. But if one thinks about it, Who posts to places like this (of any brand) when they don't have a problem of some sort? Sometimes serious and expensive problems?

These places (for all brands) exist to help owners deal with their problems, and when everything is resolved, we frequently never hear from them again. Is that because they've dumped their "unreliable POS" or are they happily motoring on through life? Who Knows?

Any brand car becomes Unreliable if not cared for properly, even a Toyota or Honda or Chevy or Ford. All except Racing Forums are also liberally posted with owners, sometimes Very angry owners, because their $120/hr. mechanic has had their car for a month and still can't get the Check Engine light to go out.

Jaguar Forums (like all other car forums) is here to help Jaguar owners get the most possible enjoyment from their cars. Our best hope is that all the Jaguars on the planet will be enjoyed So much that their owners DRIVE THE WHEELS OFF!

Welcome to the forums from ElinorB.

Welcome to the Forums.

Both my S Types are super reliable, BUT, the catch up maintenance was, and always will be, the key to that.

My advice for a very long time to anyone buying ANY used car:

"That person wants your money, and you want that car, and untruths will be told to settle that deal".

I have walked, or ran, away from many a Jaguar, and am happy to have done so.

Good luck.

This means that the car will need some some work at that mileage. This is the case for any brand.

Welcome to the forums eiknownkthingaboutjaguar,

A well maintained Jaguar is a reliable vehicle and a pleasure to drive - a neglected example is a money pit. High expectations don't fit with a low purchase price.

Follow this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...ed-v8-x200-15/ to the S-Type forum for help, advice and information. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for information on regular issues.

Enjoy the forums and good luck in the search for your Jaguar.

Graham

welcome to the forum from one who is approaching 180K miles on his 2000 XK8 (half have been put on by me when I made her my daily driver 7 +years ago) As others have said - yep older car, you will encounter bumps along the way but I still get a grin ear to ear driving her everyday! Enjoy

From one S-type owner to a another potential owner... Welcome. The S-type forum is populated with a very friendly group and contains a wealth of knowledge. Check it out.

When I did my S-type search eighteen months ago, or so, I limited it the 2003 or newer cars. This is the first "facelift" and significant improvements were made at that time to the suspension, engine management systems, automatic transmission and the looks of interior were greatly improved (gone was the "Darth Vader" dash).

YMMV, but that is my two cents (or pence) worth anyway...
