I would take his advice. However, if you are determined to proceed, follow this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...ed-v8-x200-15/ to the S-Type forum for help, advice and information.

Welcome. You might want to do as Graham suggests and spend some time on the S-type forum. Jaguar parts tend to be expensive, but some parts can be sourced from the Ford parts bin for the S-type. If you decide to proceed, then buy the best S-type you can afford and get one with a solid service history; this can save you a great deal of money in the long term.
So many tales of woe arise from buyers having to pay for the prior owner's deferred maintenance, or poorly executed "repairs". Take your time and by all means get the car inspected by a professional familiar with the marque/model prior to purchase.
Good luck!

Jaguars won't destroy your wallet any more than a BMW, Mercedes, Land Rover, or Porsche. Maserati's are in a class of their own for upkeep. Expensive new....expensive (parts/service wise) used. By all means take your time, do your research, and find the best S that's been cared for...preferably by one owner. I truly enjoyed my '05 S Type R but, yes, I put some hefty bucks into it. At the time of my search, I stumbled upon several excellent non-R buys but I had my sights on an R or nothing. I sadly missed several low mileage, well cared for cars. I settled for a third owner 79k miles car with several immediate issues...a little door rust and the usual drooping headlamp . After three years of an additional 25k miles I replaced suspension bushes and links, throttle body, overflow catch tank, rebuilt ZF tranny, and replaced the electric parking brake actuator motor....around $4k out of pocket. Some DIY labor helped a little plus some Lincoln LS/Thunderbird sourced parts. The Forums were a wonderful help.
Considering I bought the car for $12k, I really couldn't complain all that much as it looked terrific and was a blast to drive at a modest total outlay for an exceptional driving experience. I'd highly recommend any of the 4.2 models. Enjoy the search. I now drive a '16 XF and thoroughly enjoy it. Unlike the S Type, it has proven absolutely trouble free and a pure joy to own.

I would recommend getting a 2002.5 (2003 in North America) or later S-type. it has a superior engine management system (Denso) and a 6-speed ZF automatic transmission. It also has an upgraded dash arrangement that is much more pleasing to the eye than the original.
