Default Shopping for a Jag- which one?

Hey all,

Woukd be a first time Jag owner, and I’m looking at some used models in my price range. I like the XF model from 13-15 (would love to know if I should focus on a specific year) and I’ve also been looking at some 2017 XE 35t’s. I’m interested in the supercharged V6, and AWD.

Which of these models would be the better buy? In terms of comfort, drivability, and reliability? I love the way Jags look, and have pretty much talked myself into one, but want to be smart about my purchase. I know Jag doesn’t have the best reputation for reliability.

Welcome to the forums thatjagtho,

Jaguar reliability is atrocious. In the last fifty years and countless hundreds of thousands of miles in owning more than twenty of them I've had:

1. two cooling hoses burst
2. one torque converter fail
3. one injector fail

Reliability (or unreliability) is more a reflection on the OWNER than the JAGUAR and therein lies the first lesson. With any used Jaguar, fully documented service history is crucial. Carried out at the recommended intervals and ideally supported by a fat file of receipts.

On the subject of maintenance, a great deal depends on whether you can or wish to do this yourself or intend to pay a specialist. Jaguar expertise doesn't come cheap.

There is no single "better buy". I don't know if you are a 20 something desiring to travel at speed in a supercharged model (and probably accompanied by a supercharged model), in your 30's or 40's and absolutely must have family transport or able to have different models for different purposes.

As a general rule, avoid the first year of any model production. Usually the initial faults are resolved in later years. The golden rule is if in doubt - walk away.

Please read the guidance for new members ( https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/n...ned-up-241802/ ) which answers many of the most frequent questions about getting started.

Enjoy the forums and the search for your Jaguar.

Hello,
I'm not in the market for another Jag so my choice would be totally irrelevant.

You missed the most important thing?
With those models all factory warranty will be long gone.
Can you DIY any of the repairs?
If not owning ANY luxury car will be an expensive experience. Shops/dealers are hugely expensive and we see on this forum everyday that they really are not very good at repairing your car unfortunately!
This forum has been absolutely essential for me to stay in the Jaguar world. We have a group of super knowledgeable guys and they do help!

I am like GGG. I have had 2 Jaguars over the last 14 years and have been VERY satisfied.
2005 S-Type R - Got it with 24K and sold it with 132K miles.
2014 XJR - Got it at 20K miles with a 7 year CPO warranty and still own it. It is a massively powerful car and I have modified it as well.
I will say the 2014 has had almost zero repairs in the 4+ years I have owned it. Simply the best and most reliable car I have ever owned.

Welcome to teh Forums.

Your market will dictate the car, nut that snippet is missing from your home page, oops.

Like Graham, LOUSY reliability, also.

S2 V12, 710000kms, UNTOUCHED, and still roarinmg along nicely thank you.
XJS PreHE, NO IDEA, Odo stopped 20 years ago, care factor, pretty low.
XJR6, 415000kms, lower hose, in the driveway, lucky, 20 hour R&R.
XJ40 3.6ltr Over 500K kms, and daughters Daily Driver, last 16 years.

None of mine have ever seen a Flatbedm or a mechanic, I have trust issues.

Like others, ANY car is only as good as the Caretaker, AKA , YOU.
If DIY is not your calling, then a car still covered by Factory warranty is the go.

Thanks for your detailed response! I have been researching heavily on potential DIY repairs. I already plan to purchase a fluid extractor to handle the oil changes myself (minor, but still). I'm currently in my early 30s, still single and no kids, so I thought I may be able to experience owning a Jag. I really like the look of the XF models from 13-15. Trying to be somewhat practical with a sedan I suppose as to a more sporty car (insurance reasons). From what I've seen, a lot of the water pump issues are more frequent in the 5.0 models, so I've been looking for the 3.0 Supercharged AWD models. I currently drive a 08 Subaru Legacy, and do not want to sacrifice the luxury and peace of mind of having AWD.

Are there any mileage concerns I should completely right off (as in, when it hits X amount of miles stere clear). My current searches have me looking for used models with no more than 80k miles. Unfortunately, I'm not in the situation to purchase a brand new vehicle under warranty. Although, I could potentially look to newer XE models, but from my research it seems the XF may be the better vehicle overall.

Default Introduction

Hey All!

I'm new to the forum, not quite a Jag owner yet, but I am looking to get a XF or XE. I'm in my early 30's, single, and no kids. Perfect time to experience a Jaguar in my opinion! I can afford to put some money into potential maintenance due to this situation, but I still would like to find the most reliable model possible. Looking forward to joining you all in owning a Jaaaaaag! Currently located in SWVA (Southwest Virginia-United States). I don't have much auto mechanic know how, but my little brother does DIY work on his vehicle and loves to take things apart and put them back together, so I will have a little help in the DIY department!

I've always used my Jaguars as daily drivers and put over 150K miles on a few. However, I'd advise against going for any model with high mileage. The 80K miles range you are considering will cover those which have been regularly used (a good thing) but not used to the point where powertrain could possibly be requiring an imminent overhaul. However, it is the stage when suspension bushes and shock absorbers will be worn so finding one where this work has recently been done is an advantage.

Ultimately it comes down to price and condition. If the price is attractive, some repairs can be factored in. Spend time checking every switch and function on a prospective purchase. Seemingly minor electrical faults can often be frighteningly expensive to rectify. Damaged or missing trim is another costly item and becoming hard to source as these are the first parts Jaguar drop from their inventory. Check for a full set of keys. These are also expensive to replace as they have to be programmed to the vehicle.
