Greetings and howdy from Houston, Texas. A long time English car enthusiast the wife and I are now happy owners of a brand new 2020 Jaguar F-Pace-S. We spent the last year looking at a variety of vehicles, primarily SUV's, to replace my ageing and long in the tooth Dodge 1500RAM truck. Anyone interested in buying a truck?
We looked at BMW, Mercedes, Dodge, Volvo, Audi, the new Jeep Gladiator and the Jaguar, After having had three Rover bad experiences I just could not go there no matter how much better they may actually be and had a hard time considering the Jag since the two are now related. In fact at first glance I had written the Jag off. Long story, won't go into it.
We used time off during the holidays to go and take really close looks at a lot of different vehicles. We were waiting for the Jeep Gladiator to be built with the V-6 Turbo Diesel but that just does not seem to be happening so we moved on. We considered the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT which is a beast but the mileage rating was just a bit difficult to live with. Otherwise we were seriously giving it a consideration.
As it was the Jaguar dealership was just down the road from the Jeep dealer and on the way home and the wife wanted to take a closer look at the F-Pace as she had seen one in the neighborhood and it had caught her eye. My initial turn off for the high powered F-Pace SVT was the price tag, Otherwise it is a stunning piece of kit. While at the dealership we met with one of the sales people and were impressed with his knowledge of the vehicle and British car history. I've had Triumphs, Rovers and am a current long time owner of some Lotus cars. so finding common ground with a salesman who truly could speak the language weighed in heavily on our switching over to thinking about another English car. I did not know about the F-Pace-S model until we talked to the gent and after nearly half a day there and the test drive I was sold. Having them bring out the test drive vehicle in the color the wife liked may have contributed a bit to the matrimonial bliss factor as well.
Being a techno dinosaur the next few weeks will be spent learning how to operate all the electronic wizardry of the car and get a feeling of the car in the classic driving sense. So far I agree with the add hype about it having sports car like handling. For the weight , height and size it does handle remarkably well and the open road ride is excellent. The quietness is going to take a bit to get used to as everything else I drive is on the loud side.
The weekend is almost here and we are truly looking forward to our first jaunt out to the hill country to test out the full metal of the car. Will be visiting here often to catch up on the peculiarities of the mark and reading up on all the discussions. That said, cheers!
Al & Kyle B.
