Thinking about buying a Jag, so I joined
Best car I'd ever driven was a 99 XJR. Not just because it was fast as all get out (and it was) but because it was a jag, clean lines, loads of luxury. So I'm thinking of buying an XJR and figured this would be a good place to learn what I should look for and what to stay away from. So I'm looking forward to reading and learning all I can...and just a warning, you'll be seeing alot of me in the forums

All I can tell you the one I drove was a 99 XJR, and that's all I knew about it. What is the "nikasil" issue? I may also be looking at an 89 V12 XJS. I feel like a kid in a candy store "mommy I want this jag, and that one...oooh and that red one too"

When Jaguar first introduced their brand new V8 engines in XJ Series they used some different alloys in the block rathen steel . On paper it seemed good but later they realized that sulphur damaged the block and eaten some major parts to the block for V8 engines .
Many '98-00 Jaguars suffered from this problem .
In this respect, you should have VIN checked by the dealer prior to buying such model years .
Just follow the line below if you intend or find a deal on '98-00 XJ
If the last 6 digits of the chassis number begins with an F, for example F12345, it will have the later safe engine
Jaguar V8 cars built with a Nikasil engine can be identified by the VIN number.
If the last six characters begin with an '8' the car was fitted with a Nikasil engine.
If the last six characters begin with an 'F' the car was fitted with a Steel lined engine
I closely looked at in V12 XJS ,it was a Le Mans model and had a huge spoiler behind .As I ain't really into two doors ,I would never buy it but it's a neat classic one in many ways
