Hello all...just picked a NON running 1998 XJ8. Needs some TLC and I hope to bring her back to live. She is such a beautiful car. Working on trying to get her running. Just cranks, won't start.

I am a Radar Tech and have pretty decent 12 volt knowledge which should help with these kind of cars.

Good luck, Radar. I like your username, I'm an avionics guy, comes in handy for troubleshooting cars such as yours.

Thanks for the welcome guys. Just from a few days of reading I have learned so much about Jaguars. I will hopefully be working on her this weekend.

Working on it guys...FYI my name comes from me being a radar tech...yes police radar...now before you all kick me out keep in mind I love fast and fun cars as much as the next guy...if you ever have any radar related questions or there are any LEO's here please feel to contact me.

As far as the new XJ8 goes...I purchased it not running. I am 99% certain that the cylinders are washed as I have read many times here. I did pull all the plugs and put oil in all the cylinders today. Put all the plugs back in and got to almost fire...but still no luck. I am certain I am getting fuel as there is the strong distinct fuel smell if I have lifted off the full throttle a few times. The only thing I am thinking is that the plugs are so soaked that I need to replace them. Also I am getting a P1000 and P1643 just like I read someone else had with the same problem. Your thoughts? Also, is this OK posted here?

I am not sure what you have going on with your car. Your first check is for fuel and spark, the reason why is that we are finding several no starts due to an electrical problem and the other is fuel. The electrical problem is that voltage is lost from the battery to the engine controls and the other is the shifter selector switch. If it is in park the put it is neutral. Fuel could be a fuel pump or filter. Now as for your codes, at times with a low battery you will get erroneous codes. The question is it real? Unless you know differently I would ignore it for now! If your car is Nikasil then you should read this information from my page and I think you will get the picture. http://www.gusglikas.com/AutoRepairNoStart.htm then read this http://www.gusglikas.com/AutoRepairNikasilSulfur.htm I hope this helps!

Hi MrRadar, yes it is OK, but tech questions should really be posted into the model section for your car.

This section is properly for introductions, and so our guys might miss a question.

That being said, you are in good hands already

I suggest a cylinder pressure test, and post it up for comment in the relevant forum. If the Nikasil has gone completely, the engine will need replacing. Of course it may be something completely different; lets hope so !!
