Cool transnission

I have a 1985 Jaguar XJ and I recently moved and had it towed mind you on a flat bed.I was not there when the driver dropped it off mind you this model Jag has a tricky transmission driver had keys to move it off truck so I know that was not a problem however when I got home to move it to another location it would not go forward it goes in reverse and moves but not drive I am beginning to think he could not get it out of gear to get it off the truck so he pulled from under it without taking it out of gear. can you tell me what the problem could be because I do not wish to buy a transmission for this baby

Hello,
Will it move if you pull it down into 1/L?
If it moves in L besides R, then you have lunched a clutch pack.
This is because L and R are controlled by the Low/Reverse band which bypasses the clutch pack.

Welcome to the forums from ElinorB.

Tricky? How?

There's nothing inherently tricky about this model of transmission but if operating yours seems tricky it ight be related to the problem you are experiencing

driver had keys to move it off truck so I know that was not a problem however when I got home to move it to another location it would not go forward it goes in reverse and moves but not drive I am beginning to think he could not get it out of gear to get it off the truck so he pulled from under it without taking it out of gear.

I think what you mean to say is "........he could not get it out of Park...."

I guess that's a possibility but the tow truck driver would have to be very inexperienced. If we assume he DID drag it of the truck while the transmission was in "Park" then internal damage may well have occurred, probably to the parking pawl but lord knows what else.

More likely is a failure of the internal "clutch packs", as mentioned.

What's the history of the car prior to being towed?

First, though, have you checked the fluid level?

Cheers
DD

Welcome.

I have nothing to add. The BW66 is a pretty simple transmission.
