Hi folks,

I've picked up a lovely XJ8 in what I believe is a Sandstone colour. My Dad had a 2.4 Jag brand new in the early 60s, and since then I always wanted a Jag.
I do almost ll my own servicing and repairs, so this site is just the place for me.

Thanks. First is deciding what fuel to use, and what oil and filter, too. There's a couple minor things that need fixing, so I am also looking for some manuals as well.

Welcome aboard from a fellow NW resident, albeit below the border!

Definately read the FAQ's in both the X308 (XJ8 / XJR) forum and the XK8 / XKR forums. The XK series shares the same drivetrain as well as some suspension design, so the information there is very relevant to your car.

As to the gas to run, I mostly run regular 87 octane with an occasional fill up of premium 92 octane. The knock sensors do their job and retard the timing accordingly to allow the car to operate just fine with the lower octane. As to oil and filter that is the age old question. Wix makes some of the best filters and oil will never truly be answered as there will always be someone on either side of that fence. If the mileage of the engine in under 80K, and you want to run synthetic, then go ahead, otherwise I would not run it unless you have service records that indicate that it has had synthetic in it up to to now. The synthetic can cause leaks that didn't exist if you introduce it to a high mileage vehicle.

BTW, you might want to give some specifics about your car, i.e. mileage, color condition, etc.

Congratulations and enjoy.

Thanks Midlife,

I just filled up today in Blaine, WA, using Shell V power. I'll see how it goes with that.
As for my car, it's a 98 with approx 125.000 miles on it, and no service history other than a transmission repair. I'm leaning towards Castrol 5-30 GTX non synthetic. The engine has a loud ticking sound when cold that goes away when warm, so oil weight is a question.
I'm looking forward to learning about the car. It's just the thing I was looking for commuting in comfort and style.

Yes that's working, but I have a list for the car;
1. Fix the drivers door support arm, or whatever it's called.
2. Replace the missing highbeam headlight adjuster.
3. Get winter floor mats.
4. Buy a new remote fob.
5. Fix the right rear muffler/resonator.
6. Play with the bluetooth/ipod upgrades.
7. Replace the shifter knob, maybe with wood.
8. Fiddle with the seat heaters. It's 13 C today, and no heat. I'd like to remove the thermostats if possible.
9. Generally tinker and enjoy the car.
