What Have I Done!!!
Hello Folks - So I promised my 19 year old car nut daughter we would look for a project car and we ended up with a '97 XJ6. She researched the crap out of it it, found a candidate, and here we are. Her name is Jenny - the car (after my grandmother) and is already well under way to new glory. I look forward to picking your brains. Thank you in advance! John

Hello, John,
What have you done? I'll tell you what you've done, you have given your daughter a project that she will find fun, frustrating, and incredibly fulfilling and confidence building.. That's what you have done.
She will have Such a sense of accomplishment when the two of you get her car on the road, there will be no words to adequately describe. And she will take very good care of it because she has invested her own time and effort.
Good Man!!

All kids should get their first car the same way I did. Dad trailered home a wrecked car and told me quote "Son, if you can fix it, you can drive it." I had to go downtown to this building, I think they called it a "Library" (the internet hadn't been invented yet), and check out a bunch of books, Chiltons manual, general maintenance, how to do body work, etc. Dad sat in a lawn chair and watched while I pulled the motor, just to make sure I didn't hurt myself when I did something semi-dangerous, but other than that, he made me figure out everything myself. And I had to work an after-school and summer job and pay for all the parts and supplies and gas. Dad paid my liability insurance through college, that was it.
For me, it was the start of a lifelong hobby and passion for all things mechanical. I'd done three cars by the time I graduated high school and lost count since. But even if your daughter never picks up a wrench ever again after this, she'll learn enough about how a car works that no service tech will ever be able to take advantage of her. When she goes in with a check engine light and they tell her she needs a new engine for $25,000 (they know they can get away with scamming most men too nowadays), she'll be able to call them out, asking to see the compression across the cylinders, the leak-down test, etc. What have you done? You've saved her literally tens of thousands of dollars over a lifetime is what you've done. Way to go Dad!
