XJ-SC in Virginia
Greetings from Norfolk, Virginia. My 1987 Jaguar XJ-SC cabriolet is my second Jaguar - the first was a 1986 XJ-6. The XJ-SC was listed in the local Craig's List and I decided to 'just take a look' since I had never seen the body style before. It had a number of small things wrong, but was a 2-owner car with the original window sticker and $40K+ in receipts for repair work. The seller had owned the car 8 years and put 7K miles on it, and spent $10K+ in repairs. He wanted rid of it. I made a ridiculously low offer and he accepted it! I fixed the various ills for about $20 and drove the car for club events, racking up 2500 trouble-free miles. Then it cut off a block from the house about two months ago. I pushed it back and started diagnosing. It will start and run badly, putting out a lot of smoke which it did not do before. My current thinking is that the transmission modulator valve went. I got the valve for $12 locally (Standard GM 400 Automatic), only to discover I had to drop the right side exhaust to get the old one out. This was 2 days before I left for a month in Africa, where I still am. I have fingers crossed that the modulator valve solves the issue - it is a beautiful car (black w/magnolia leather) and a blast to drive.
