Default XK or XKR that is the question

Looking to purchase 2007 ish XK or XKR convertible in the not too distant future as my weekend warrior car.
Have told 'er indoors' (OK, she gave me permission) that I would like one of these cars for my 'mid life crisis' 50th birthday gift to myself
Until recently I had never driven either of these cars but loved the styling. I have now driven the XK and would happily settle for that, but have not experienced the R
Other than styling, is the R greatly different than the XK ?
I have recently seen an 2007 XKR low mileage project car with a bad hydro statically locked engine that I am really tempted with . How difficult are these to work on ?

As you'd know, the XK has the 4.2NA and the XKR has the 4.2 SC. The 4.2 NA is a nice engine and sounds awesome. I had one in my first XF, it was the best sounding engine in any car I've owned especially after I put on a paramount back section. It is lovely for cruising and brisk but not quick in a sports car sense. The SC sounds awesome-er and is genuinely quick. The 4.2 doesnt have an LSD but probably doesnt need one.

If you are not made on acceleration, the XK will be plenty good enough I'd think.

Welcome to teh Forums.

A "locked up" R, or any for that matter, is a neglected car, walk away.

The $$ to sort it properly will scare you.

Good luck.

Welcome to the forums Nick,

Whether you need an XKR or the XK is sufficient is personal preference. I suggest you drive both and then make up your own mind. One thing I would definitely caution against is buying either with a locked engine. It will almost certainly cost more to buy and repair than simply buying a good one in the first place.

Condition and history is critical with any used Jaguar. Neglect and abuse are expensive to rectify.

Thanks for the comments, think I will put the locked up R out of my mind. Surely was tempting at $7K for a 2007. Apparently driven through a puddle , albeit a large one methinks.
Trying to test drive an XKR around the midwest (STL, MO) is a challenging feat. I was happy enough with the growl and ride of the XK, but love the additional R styling.
Is the handling of the XKR vastly different than the XK (other than acceleration) ?
