Just did a "buy it now" on the auction site from hell.
Got a full set of 1990 owner's handbooks for cheap .... about 18 bucks shipped.

Now maybe I can figure out what some of the icons represent on that video arcade that Jaguar calls a dash.
My Haynes manual doesn't cover any of that sort of info.

Also will be helpful on some of the dash switches, climate control and etc.
Some of that stuff is pretty self evident, and some of it is like ...huh...???

And it finally runs ..... oh yeah ....!!!!

Mind you, it's not running well, (pretty crappy ,actually).
Got it fired off just before dark, and was able to sneak a short ride around the block. Lots of work still to do.

Initial findings:
Engine sounds to be in good mechanical condition but running poorly, missing, etc.
New fuel pump (I think), is making all kinds of racket.
The "power" portion of steering and brakes isn't working at all.
I never detected any shifting from the transmission. Goes forward, goes backward, but no shifting. Possibly a "limp home" mode ....???

Hard to tell much of anything in such a short drive. Tomorrow I will get serious about some of these issues.

Great news that it seems to want to run, albeit like a camel with hiccoughs.

Regards you gear changes, were you going fast enough for the car to change, normally around 53mph for the car to change into top, with light pedal pressure.

You should be able to shift through all the gears and never go much above 2000rpm with a light foot. At least my 92 does.

Simply watch the rev counter it will drop when the car shifts up.

If in limp mode you will have a CEL and most likely a fuel fail message showing on the bridge display board.

Steering and brakes, you do have fluid in there?

Not much progress on the actual project, but I am making some inroads into the mess in the shop. Getting new equipment set up and everything sorted and placed.

A major happy today. Just finished signing up for a 10 week welding course at the local community college. It begins in May.
They only take a limited number of students (10), and I missed the last course because it was booked up.
Maybe I'll learn how to use my new welder properly!

 

Cool. Let us know what you will be doing with 'welded 10 weeks' when you are done

PS, if you want some practical hands on experience before attacking your own car, pop on over, my XJ40 needs new sills, and an inner wing repair.

But that does give rise to further speculation. I don't know anything about this particular class, but I've seen situations where trainees/students were encouraged to create their own projects.

Speaking of welding. I made a comment in an earlier post that I hadn't done any welding since 1964. I did some googling just now and found out I was one year off .... it was 1965.

I was attending a shipfitting school at the Chicago Bridge & Steel shipyard in Pascagoula, Mississippi.
Came to class one Monday morning to find an immense pile of broken and shattered wooden beams had been placed in a corner of the yard over the weekend. It was all being kept wet with a sprinkler system.
When I inquired about it, I found it was the remains of the Civil War ironclad Cairo, which had been raised from the bottom of the Mississippi river, where it had been sunk during the siege of Vicksburg.
(Hey, am I the absolute master of the run-on sentence or what ...?)

I went to your virtual garage, and even dug through some of your back posts to see if you gave any additional info on the build.

In the garage section for "interior/exterior modifications" you've entered "yes".

Couldn't tell from your pics, does it have a convertible top or it a fair weather only ride?
