I sold my 17-40 a while back and miss having a wide angle. I'm pretty much settled on the Tokina 11-16 since it exhibits the least distortion and won't cause bankruptcy. A major plus is that at 16mm it can be used on a fullframe camera and not break the mirror. But I'd also really like to pick up a 90mm Rodenstock or Schneider for the 4X5.

I don't really have a favorite lens... I have several. The 24-105L and 70-300L are two of my favorite lenses. The 24-105L is just so versatile as a main lens since lightroom can easily remove the distortion and the 70-300L is incredibly sharp at every focal length.
Right now I have four lenses with my 5DmkII. 24-105L, 70-300L, 85LII and the 100L macro. The 14L will be my next.
I'd love to own another 10-22, but I don't have a crop body at the moment.

Well, right now I have a Canon 450D (aka, XSi). I have the 18-55MM lens and the 55-250MM lens. They each have their place. I am researching into getting something along the lines of a 28MM F/1.8 lens right now.
This leads me to a question, I am looking at going on vacation and planning on taking a bunch of pictures of the grand kids. A lot of the pics are going to be indoors at a fairly short range (6 feet or so). I have been using my 18-55MM lens, but with the F stop running 4-5.6, the house is dark enough that I some times have issues, even using the IS. So, I am looking at getting a prime lens with a much better F rating. Hopefully that will give me the light to be able to take a pic without having to use flash (not a big fan of flash, just am). I am looking at "Nifty Fifty" at F/1.8, but I am worried that with a 1.6X sensor factor, this may have me needing to stand across the room to take a pic. Got any recommendations? I'm interested. I think the 28MM lens is my best bet, but the price is killing me (upwards of $550). The 50MM lens can be had for pretty cheap (finding it as low as $109 brand new, Canon brand).
Along these same lines, what sort of time difference can I expect. If I go from say F/4.0 to F/1.8, will the time only double (since I am letting in more light and making the assumption that I am using the same focal length in both cases). Or does it go up by a factor of say 4? Just trying to get an idea of what sort of gains I can expect. The shutter time isn't going to change significantly with the faster lens, then I may stick with what I have and just look at getting a different zoom lens to bridge the gap between my two lenses (looking at the 28-135MM Canon right now also).

From 1.8 to 4 is 2 full stops of light. keep in mind also that using the lens wide open narrows the focus plane, at 1.8 the region in focus is very small. I'd try increasing the ISO to base line 800 depending on how dark it is first. If you get the exposure correct the noise isn't bad at all even above 800. The 50 1.8 is a good lens for the money, very sharp stopped down to 8. The crop factor makes it look like an 80mm which is considered within the desired portrait focal lengths. But if you need wider your best bet is bump the ISO and use the 18-55. Also consider an adapter, the Nikon 35 1.8 is pretty good for the money.
