Default Jaguar Books, Books, and More Books

For those rare individuals who have escaped the current plague of digital media and still value that physical object called “a book”, I offer a variety of Jaguar titles for sale. These are from my own collection, hence only one copy of each is available. For those purchasing three or more items, I offer a 25% discount on the total price. Shipping in the US is free.

The titles are divided into three categories: E-Types, History, and Competition. Please quote the unique item number in any enquiry. Links are provided to photos of the actual items. Lots of reading below, take your time!

Item E11.Andrew Morland, E-Type Jaguar, Osprey Publishing, 1991, paperback, 9” x 8-1/4”, 128 pages. $10.
Primarily a compedium of glorious, glossy photos of all sorts of E-Type details, with a modicum of text.

Item E12.James Page, 50 Years of the Jaguar E-Type, Future Publishing Ltd, 2009, paperback, 11-3/4” x 8-1/4”, 200 pages. $22.
A commemorative edition from the UK Classics Monthly Magazine, large format, all glossy color. Covers development history, restoration details, competition history, buyer's guide, driving impressions, capped off with a Norman Dewis interview.

Item E15.Philip Porter, The Most Famous Car in the World – The Story of the First E-Type Jaguar, Orion Books, 2000, hardback with dust jacket, 10-3/4” x 8”, 248 pages. $29.
All about the only survivor out of the original E-Type prototypes, registered as “9600 HP”. Written by one of the foremost E-Type historians, owner and restorer of the car. For a change, a book with much more text than photos. A must book for the E-Type enthusiast.

Item E19.Dale Sass, Jaguar XK-E – A Source Book, Bookman Publishing, 1984, paperback, 10” x 7”, 143 pages. $12.
One of the earlier books on the XK-E. Reprints of factory sales literature in black and white.

Item E23.Matthew L. Stone, Jaguar E-Type – Sports Car Color History, Motorbooks International, 1995, paperback, 10-5/8” x 8-1/4”, 128 pages. $16.

Item E25.Jonathan Wood, Jaguar E-Type – The Complete Story, Crowood Press, 1990, hardback with dust jacket, 10-3/8” x 8”, 207 pages. $22.
Another of the earlier overviews of the E-Type, but much more than just a collection of reprints. Lots of original material, history, rare photos, a mix of color and black and white.

Item E27.Walter Zeichner (translated from the German by Dr. Edward Force), Jaguar XK-E 1961-73, Schiffer Publishing, 1990, hardback, 10-5/8” x 8”, 94 pages. $14.
A bit of a rarity. Reprints of factory sales literature, data specs, mostly in black and white with some color plates.

Item E28.Road & Track Magazine-published reprint archive in the original R&T folder: reprints of 5 R&T road tests of the XK-E from the 1961 to 1969 issues. Plus a review by Richard Langworth of the British auto industry (1974, through very dark rosy glasses?), and of the Chevrolet Nomad. $12.

Item E31. Set of two Jaguar XK-E 4.2 Coupe & Roadster - “a different breed of cat” advertising brochures published by Jaguar Cars Inc. Each is in color, 11” x 8-1/2”, with photos and specs. One is single page, two-sided. The other is four pages. $25 for the pair.

History Books for Sale

Item H1.Roy Bacon, Jaguar in Pictures – Beaulieu Archives, Niton Publishing, 1999, hardback with dust jacket, 12-1/8” x 9-1/2”, 160 pages. $10
As the title says, tons and tons and tons of large format archival photos. A visual treat.

Item H2.R.M. Clarke, Daimler Dart & V8 250, 1959-1969, Brooklands Books, 1982, paperback, 10-3/4” x 7-7/8”, 100 pages. $35
Another of the Brooklands compilations of road tests and techincal articles, this time of the acquired-taste Daimler sports car, taken over by Jaguar with its purchase of the Daimler company, plus the Daimler-badged Mark 2 saloon. A fascinating detour into a Jaguar engineering cul-de-sac.

Item H4.Ian Cooling, The Complete Guide to Jaguar Collectibles, Bay View Books, 1998, hardback with dust jacket, 10-3/8” x 10-3/8”, 192 pages. $18
Large format book by the leading exponent of Jaguar automobilia. Glorious photos by James Mann of memorabilia, art/design, models, sales catalogues, books/magazines, badges, advertising, rarities.

Item H5.Jeff Daniels, Jaguar – The Engineering Story, Haynes Publishing, 2004, hardback with dust jacket, 11” x 8-1/2”, 224 pages. $15
An excellent “mechanical” history of Jaguar, written by an aero engineer slash motoring journalist who knew many of the original Jaguar team. Emphasis on photos of the componentry and much design discussion. Then-current up through the introduction of the first all-aluminium bodied models.

Item H7.Michael Frostick, The Jaguar Tradition, Dalton Watson Publishing, 1977, hardback with dust jacket, 10” x 7-1/2”, 212 pages. $10
One of the earlier overviews of Jaguar history. Very heavy on photos (even Jaguar-engined speed-record boats), not much text beyond detailed photo captions and data tables.

Item H8.James Hoehn, Illustrated Jaguar Buyer's Guide – Second Edition, Motorbooks International, 1987, paperback, 9-1/4” x 7-1/2”, 158 pages. $8
Very interesting window into what an expert was predicting to be future collectible Jaguar models 30 years ago. Nice coverage of all the models through 1988, including the racing Jaguars. A bit of a way-back machine.

Item H10.Ian Norris, Jaguar – Catalogue Raisonne, 1922-1992, Automobilia (Milan, Italy), 1991, hardback with dust jacket in matching presentation box, 11-1/2” x 10”, total of 445 pages in two volumes. Text in Italian, English, and French. $145
A massive two-volume celebration of 70 years of Jaguar, with the first volume covering company and racing history, and the second volume cataloguing every Jaguar model ever made (to 1991) – photos and complete technical specs. A collectible rarity in itself. Worthy of several photos of just this item.

Item H12.Barrie Price, The Rise of Jaguar – A detailed study of the 'Standard era' 1928 to 1950, Veloce Publishing, 2004, hardback with dust jacket, 10-1/8” x 10-1/8”, 176 pages. $55
Another marvelous book with a unique focus – a detailed study of how SS metamorphosed into Jaguar. Full of fascinating photos from the push-rod era, copies of Rolls Royce's headscratching memos on the SS, detailed financial data (e.g., in 1939, the profit on each SS100 3.5L sports car sold was GBP30!)

Item H13.Paul Skilleter, Jaguar Sports Cars, Haynes Publishing, 1975, hardback with dust jacket, 9-1/2” x 8-3/4”, 360 pages. $40
Skilleter's first attempt at a Jaguar magnum opus – an outstanding reference. Exhaustive treatment of all Jaguar sports cars up to the early XJ-S. Details of the development of each model, the response of the market to the cars, and with comprehensive appendices of specifications. Good coverage of the competion cars.

Item H14.Paul Skilleter with Andrew Whyte, Jaguar Saloon Cars, Haynes Publishing, 1980, hardback with dust jacket, 11” x 8-3/4”, 602 pages. $45
An even more gigantic reference work by Skilleter, this time on the Jaguar sedans (saloons). Covers all models up to the Series 3 XJ. Lots of developmental information and testing results. About 25% of the book covers the cars' competition history, written by factory-man Andrew Whyte. Comprehensive appendices.

Item H15.Paul Skilleter, The Jaguar Driver's Year Book, 4 Volumes, Magpie Publishing, hardback with dust jacket, 12” x 8-1/2”. 1977 Edition - 108 pages. 1978 Edition – 120 pages. 1979-80 Edition – 120 pages. 1980-81 Edition – 120 pages. Four volume set for $35.
A complete set of the Year Books created by Paul Skilleter during his stint as editor of “Jaguar Driver”, the monthly magazine of the Jaguar Driver's Club (UK). Much more than just a collection of stuff from the monthly, especially the 4th volume commemorating the 25th anniversary of the JDC with unique historical articles (e.g., a long interview with Norman Dewis, and reminisences of an ex-employee of SS Cars). A must for a collector of Skilleter literature (a cottage industry in itself!).

Item H16. Brian E. Smith, The Daimler Tradition, Transport Bookman Publications, 1972, hardback with dust jacket, 9-1/2” x 7-1/4”, 334 pages. $25
Yes, Daimlers became a part of Jaguar only towards the end (and did carry forwards into Jaguar's badge engineered variations), but still lots of interesting history here. A quite early contribution to the literature in the field by a premier Daimler enthusiast. A comprehensive tome, down to individual chassis numbers.

Item H20.Andrew Whyte, Jaguar – The history of a great British car, Patrick Stephens, 1980, hardback with dust jacket, 9-1/2” x 6-7/8”, 249 pages. $15
Written by an insider who started as a Jaguar apprentice and ended up Director of Public Relations for the company. A book with a unique focus on the people who made and sold the cars (in Part 1), as well as the cars themselves (in Part 2). Much information to be found nowhere else.

Item H21.Jonathan Wood, Jaguar – The Legend, Smithmark Publishers, 1998, hardback with dust jacket, 10-1/4” x 7-7/8”, 80 pages. $7
Primarily a compilation of wonderful color photos from the Swallow Seven to the first XK8. Descriptive text on each model, with a specifications summary. A nice little overview of Jaguars.

Competition and Performance Books and Memorabilia for Sale

Item C2.Eric Dymock, Ecurie Ecosse – David Murray and the legendary Scottish motor racing team, PJ Publishing, 2007, hardback with dust jacket, 12” x 9-1/4”, 271 pages. $95.
Ecurie Ecosse were the privateers who at times played David to the Goliath of the works Jaguars, including EE's Le Mans victories in 1956 and 1957. This book describes the team's history as well as the details of the XK120s, C-Types, D-Types, Listers, and Tojeiros that David Murray fielded. Yet another of the magnificent coffee-table-sized productions by Paul Skilleter Books.

Webers were the carburetors of choice on high performance variants of the Jaguar XK engine. This book covers the tune-up, overhaul, and specifications of all Weber carbs through 1979.

Item C6.Denis Jenkinson, Jenks – A passion for motor sport, Motor Racing Publications, 1997, hardback with dust jacket, 10” x 7-5/8”, 224 pages. $38.
Jenks was the premier motorsports journalist of his era and a genuine eccentric, best known for his epic stint as mad navigator to Stirling Moss' bonkers driver in their record shattering victory in the 1955 Mille Miglia. Read this book and realize that such men no longer exist. Only Jaguar connection in this book is the chapter on Jenks' brief episode of E-Type OTS ownership, but the book is still a wonderful read.

Item C7.Doug Nye, Powered by Jaguar – The Cooper, HWM, Lister and Tojeiro sports racing cars, Motor Racing Publications, 1980, hardback with dust jacket, 10” x 7-5/8”, 168 pages. $18.

With one exception, SUs were the standard carburettors all variants of the pre-FI Jaguar XK engine. This book covers the tune-up, overhaul, and specifications of all SU carbs through 1976.

Item C10.Graham Robson, Jaguar D Type & XKSS – Works and customer cars; Deetype & Lynx, Osprey Publishing, 1983, hardback with dust jacket, 8-5/8” x 7-1/2”, 135 pages. $48.
Nice compact summary of the last of the classic Jaguar racing sports cars. Includes a chapter on the earliest replicas, and another chapter on the E2A, E-Type and XJ13 descendants.

Item C11.Paul Skilleter, Jaguar – The Sporting Heritage, Virgin Publishing, 2000, hardback with dust jacket, 12-3/8” x 10-5/8”, 256 pages. $26.
Another mega-sized coffee-table book covering Jaguar racing from Swallow days to Formula One. Just as heavy on the photos (many of which I had not seen before) as on the text. Perhaps the definitive illustrated history of Jaguars in competition, compiled with the full cooperation of the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust.

Item C12.Paul Skilleter with Norman Dewis, Norman Dewis of Jaguar – Developing the Legend, PJ Publishing, 2007, hardback with dust jacket, 12” x 9-1/8”, 575 pages. This copy personally signed by Norman Dewis and Paul Skilleter. $98.

Lots of D-type information in a few more pages in the later, larger Profiles format.

Item C18 (E33). The EJAG News Magazine, December 1980 – Vol. 7, No. 12. Cover photo of the 1980 SCCA C-Production National Champion E-Type, with 16 page story on the Freddy Baker win at the Road Atlanta championship run-off in the Gran Turismo Jaguar 6-cylinder E-Type. I have two copies: $10 for one, and $8 for the other (minor edge smudges on that one's front cover).

Item C19. A historic publicity package from Group 44 celebrating their championship in the 1977 SCCA TransAm racing season in the Jaguar XJ-S. Bump - I really need to clear out my shelving, so I am upping the discount!

For any order of four or more books, take 40% off the total posted price. And shipping is still free within the US.
