Default Jaguar History Books

FS: Jaguar History Books

My third and final Jaguar book offering, this time books related to Jaguar company history or general Jaguar topics. Some rarities. Since I am selling off portions of my private library, only one copy of each book is available. All these books are very gently used, in Very Good to Excellent condition (mostly the latter). All prices include shipping in the US, which is substantial for the larger format, weighty books. (Unable to respond to foreign enquiries since international book shipping rates have skyrocketed for private, non-business individuals.) My book summaries are in italics below each item. If you need further information on any items, do not hesitate to contact me.

I also have two other Jaguar book threads out there. One for Jaguar E-Type titles:
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/p...-books-174761/
The other for Jaguar competition titles:

History Books for Sale

Item H1.Roy Bacon, Jaguar in Pictures – Beaulieu Archives, Niton Publishing, 1999, hardback with dust jacket, 12-1/8” x 9-1/2”, 160 pages. $10
As the title says, tons and tons and tons of large format archival photos. A visual treat.

Item H2.R.M. Clarke, Daimler Dart & V8 250, 1959-1969, Brooklands Books, 1982, paperback, 10-3/4” x 7-7/8”, 100 pages. $35
Another of the Brooklands compilations of road tests and techincal articles, this time of the acquired-taste Daimler sports car, taken over by Jaguar with its purchase of the Daimler company, plus the Daimler-badged Mark 2 saloon. A fascinating detour into a Jaguar engineering cul-de-sac.

Item H3.Paul Collins & Michael Stratton, British Car Factories From 1896 – A Complete Historical, Geographical, Architectural, & Technological Survey, Veloce Publishing, 1993, hardback with dust jacket, 10-7/8” x 8-1/2”, 269 pages. $45
Another book that totally fulfils the promise of its title. A veritable encyclopedia of obscure (and not so obscure) British car manufacturers. Many historical photos and much useful (and unique) historical research delivered in a very readable style. Of course, coverage of SS and Jaguar in the Midlands.

Item H4.Ian Cooling, The Complete Guide to Jaguar Collectibles, Bay View Books, 1998, hardback with dust jacket, 10-3/8” x 10-3/8”, 192 pages. $18
Large format book by the leading exponent of Jaguar automobilia. Glorious photos by James Mann of memorabilia, art/design, models, sales catalogues, books/magazines, badges, advertising, rarities.

Item H5.Jeff Daniels, Jaguar – The Engineering Story, Haynes Publishing, 2004, hardback with dust jacket, 11” x 8-1/2”, 224 pages. $15
An excellent “mechanical” history of Jaguar, written by an aero engineer slash motoring journalist who knew many of the original Jaguar team. Emphasis on photos of the componentry and much design discussion. Then-current up through the introduction of the first all-aluminium bodied models.

Item H6.John Dugdale, Jaguar in America, BritBooks Publishing, 1993, hardback with dust jacket, 11” x 8-1/2”, 271 pages. $18
Written by one of the pioneering British car executives in the US, with Jaguar from 1954 onwards. The full story on how Jaguar was the first major company to birth the imported car industry in the US. Lots of period photos (hilarious to see R&T's Mike Knepper in bell bottoms), tons of inside scooping.

Item H7.Michael Frostick, The Jaguar Tradition, Dalton Watson Publishing, 1977, hardback with dust jacket, 10” x 7-1/2”, 212 pages. $10
One of the earlier overviews of Jaguar history. Very heavy on photos (even Jaguar-engined speed-record boats), not much text beyond detailed photo captions and data tables.

Item H8.James Hoehn, Illustrated Jaguar Buyer's Guide – Second Edition, Motorbooks International, 1987, paperback, 9-1/4” x 7-1/2”, 158 pages. $8
Very interesting window into what an expert was predicting to be future collectible Jaguar models 30 years ago. Nice coverage of all the models through 1988, including the racing Jaguars. A bit of a way-back machine.

Item H9.Lord Montagu of Beaulieu, Jaguar, A.S. Barnes & Co., 1974, hardback with dust jacket, 11-1/4” x 10-1/4”, 222 pages. $25
Perhaps the pioneering serious book on the topic of Jaguar history. First printed in 1969, this is the second edition from 1974, the very first Jaguar book that I purchased. It covers the company history from Blackpool days to the merger with BMC in 1966. Exceedingly well written by the titled owner/builder of the premier British car museum. Many B&W photos, much competition history, well thumbed by me, but still very nice.

Item H10.Ian Norris, Jaguar – Catalogue Raisonne, 1922-1992, Automobilia (Milan, Italy), 1991, hardback with dust jacket in matching presentation box, 11-1/2” x 10”, total of 445 pages in two volumes. Text in Italian, English, and French. $210
A massive two-volume celebration of 70 years of Jaguar, with the first volume covering company and racing history, and the second volume cataloguing every Jaguar model ever made (to 1991) – photos and complete technical specs. A collectible rarity in itself. Worthy of several photos of just this item.

Item H11.Philip Porter & Paul Skilleter, Sir William Lyons – The Official Biography, Haynes Publishing, 2001, hardback with dust jacket, 9-1/2” x 6-3/4”, 296 pages. $25
A very detailed biography of The Old Man, written by two of the most knowledgable Jaguar authors, with full access to company and family archives. Published to commemorate the centenial of Sir William's birth. Great insights into how Jaguar became Jaguar, and remained Jaguar.

Item H12.Barrie Price, The Rise of Jaguar – A detailed study of the 'Standard era' 1928 to 1950, Veloce Publishing, 2004, hardback with dust jacket, 10-1/8” x 10-1/8”, 176 pages. $55
Another marvelous book with a unique focus – a detailed study of how SS metamorphosed into Jaguar. Full of fascinating photos from the push-rod era, copies of Rolls Royce's headscratching memos on the SS, detailed financial data (e.g., in 1939, the profit on each SS100 3.5L sports car sold was GBP30!)

Item H13.Paul Skilleter, Jaguar Sports Cars, Haynes Publishing, 1975, hardback with dust jacket, 9-1/2” x 8-3/4”, 360 pages. $40
Skilleter's first attempt at a Jaguar magnum opus – an outstanding reference. Exhaustive treatment of all Jaguar sports cars up to the early XJ-S. Details of the development of each model, the response of the market to the cars, and with comprehensive appendices of specifications. Good coverage of the competion cars.

Item H14.Paul Skilleter with Andrew Whyte, Jaguar Saloon Cars, Haynes Publishing, 1980, hardback with dust jacket, 11” x 8-3/4”, 602 pages. $45
An even more gigantic reference work by Skilleter, this time on the Jaguar sedans (saloons). Covers all models up to the Series 3 XJ. Lots of developmental information and testing results. About 25% of the book covers the cars' competition history, written by factory-man Andrew Whyte. Comprehensive appendices.

Item H15.Paul Skilleter, The Jaguar Driver's Year Book, 4 Volumes, Magpie Publishing, hardback with dust jacket, 12” x 8-1/2”. 1977 Edition - 108 pages. 1978 Edition – 120 pages. 1979-80 Edition – 120 pages. 1980-81 Edition – 120 pages. Four volume set for $35.
A complete set of the Year Books created by Paul Skilleter during his stint as editor of “Jaguar Driver”, the monthly magazine of the Jaguar Driver's Club (UK). Much more than just a collection of stuff from the monthly, especially the 4th volume commemorating the 25th anniversary of the JDC with unique historical articles (e.g., a long interview with Norman Dewis, and reminisences of an ex-employee of SS Cars). A must for a collector of Skilleter literature (a cottage industry in itself!).

Item H16. Brian E. Smith, The Daimler Tradition, Transport Bookman Publications, 1972, hardback with dust jacket, 9-1/2” x 7-1/4”, 334 pages. $25
Yes, Daimlers became a part of Jaguar only towards the end (and did carry forwards into Jaguar's badge engineered variations), but still lots of interesting history here. A quite early contribution to the literature in the field by a premier Daimler enthusiast. A comprehensive tome, down to individual chassis numbers.

Item H17.Jonathan A. Stein, British Sports Cars in America 1946-1981, Automobile Quarterly, 1993, hardback with dust jacket, 11-1/4” x 8-3/4”, 144 pages. $20
A very nice overview of all the British sports cars in the US during the classic era, in which Jaguar had a big role. Nice large format photos, color and B&W. Descriptive text on each marque. Makes a good complement to Dugdale's book (Item H6).

Item H18.Nigel Thorley, Jaguar in Coventry – Building the Legend, Breedon Books Publishing, 2002, hardback with dust jacket, 10-1/2” x 8”, 192 pages. $20
A book commissioned to celebrate 50 years of Jaguar at Browns Lane. A history of Jaguar through the lens of how and where the cars were built during the Coventry era (and also earlier). Many interesting photos of the plant floors (painting the cars with neckties on, but no respiratory protection). Much archival research undertaken to produce this construction-focused history.

Item H19.Nigel Thorley, Jaguar - Marketing the Marque, Haynes Publishing, 2006, hardback with dust jacket, 11-1/4” x 8-1/4”, 191 pages. $25
And now for something different – the history of Jaguar seen through its advertising, brochures and catalogues. Many, many full color photos of the literature used to sell the cars, as well as a comprehensive discussion of the material. Coverage from the SS to the all-aluminium XJ and XK.

Item H20.Andrew Whyte, Jaguar – The history of a great British car, Patrick Stephens, 1980, hardback with dust jacket, 9-1/2” x 6-7/8”, 249 pages. $15
Written by an insider who started as a Jaguar apprentice and ended up Director of Public Relations for the company. A book with a unique focus on the people who made and sold the cars (in Part 1), as well as the cars themselves (in Part 2). Much information to be found nowhere else.

Item H21.Jonathan Wood, Jaguar – The Legend, Smithmark Publishers, 1998, hardback with dust jacket, 10-1/4” x 7-7/8”, 80 pages. $7
Primarily a compilation of wonderful color photos from the Swallow Seven to the first XK8. Descriptive text on each model, with a specifications summary. A nice little overview of Jaguars.

25% OFF SALE

Order any four or more items, and knock 25% off the total cost. Still no extra charge for shipping in the US. The items can be combined from any of the three Jaguar book sale threads that I have sitting out there (E-Type, Competition, or History):
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/p...-books-174761/
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/p...-books-176102/
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/p...-books-178741/

Note that after 30 days, an inactive thread is automatically marked “sold”, whatever the reality, unless the thread has been bumped in the interim. I am tired of bumping threads. So if you come upon these threads in the future, unless the thread itself says items are sold, the stuff is still available!
