That's a F Type accessory I assume the cigar lighter is always on with those.

The $179 CTEK works no better than the $30 Battery Tenders.

Battery Tender 021-0123 Battery Tender Junior 12V Battery Charger: Amazon.ca: Automotive Battery Tender 021-0123 Battery Tender Junior 12V Battery Charger: Amazon.ca: Automotive

Again- no tender of any type will work if it's plugged into the lighter socket. It needs to be attached directly to the battery.

Either way, it needs to connect to a feed that's live even with key out.

Yes. The one he posted would not do that.

I think this is the connection direct to the battery, which would mean it was HOT.

I think your right, it looks like the "cigarette lighter" plug goes into the DIN socket which is hooked up to the battery and the unit get's plugged in to the mains.
I'm sure tai4de2 will let us know.

Not part of our cars. You have to wire that in? Clear as mud. Just use a CTEK - which seems much cheaper - or better yet just drive reasonably often and then nothing is needed.

There's no such socket in the 'loadspace' (trunk/boot) of an S-type.

Jeez, did I say there was? I was just trying to understand how the thing works, I'm sure if you were that way inclined you could install the socket the same as the F Type guys seem to have to do.

Boating supply houses, aka chandler shops, have nice cigarette lighter sockets with the rubber covers and bushing mount as shown in the other thread.

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/f...itioner-99900/

About $5.00 gets a nice one.

With the water resistant cover, it could even be mounted on the bottom lip of the bumper.

Also makes a nice auxillary power port.

From what I can deduce, the F-types have a socket fitted by the factory in the rear cargo area that it NOT switched via the key. It's always 'hot' so to speak. The owner plugs his tender into it when the car is being stored. Very convenient.

I took a simpler (to me) route with our S-type. The battery tender I linked to above comes with two sets of leads, with a quick disconnect plug. One set of leads has alligator clips on the end, the other has eyelets. I permanently installed the lead with eyelets on the battery cables which was maybe a five minute job. When not sitting with the tender attached, the cable sits on the floor of the boot pushed out of the way. I use the other set of leads with clips to top up the batteries for the boat, tractor etc.

I know this thread is not about F-Types, but as a data point the F-Type doesn't come with a battery conditioner socket; a battery conditioner kit has to be ordered and installed. The kit is 2 distinct parts.

The wiring harness/socket: one end gets permanently connected to the battery. The other end is a socket which is *not* a standard cigarette lighter receptacle, which confused me at first. To use the charger, I had to remove a red sleeve from the tip of the plug, which I previously didn't even realize was removable. (I don't know whether the socket could provide power as well as support the conditioning function's inbound power flow; I suspect the different socket indicates not, and is intended to prevent someone from damaging the battery or car by inadvertently trying.)

The charger: has the Jaguar brand on it but from what I can tell it is absolutely identical to the unbranded CTK one I already had in my garage from a previous vehicle. I could have saved the money and just ordered the wiring harness.

Pictures in this thread, including of the charger tip with the red sleeve I mentioned above.

Hope that helps.

This is the battery charger I have mounted in the trunk of my xk8 and it works just fine.

Ah- I follow now. Thanks.

Does appear that there's simpler and less expensive options though.
