Looking at OBDII software again
I did this a while ago trying to get my Ipad to work with a bluetooth ELM327 and that was pretty much hopeless so now I'm trying it out on my Window 7 work station which is in range of the car in the driveway.
So I thought I'd download Palmer Performance Scan XL Standard.
It worked on my Chevy Suburban without error messages besides that it won't retrieve squat because it's not licensed.
But when I switched to the JAG it comes up with this as a log.
The ones in bold say unsupported so I'm guess this is a big issue?
The unlicensed one's I'll check with the vendor about that being due to not having a basic license.
I'd like something that's going to help out with my intermittent check engine light P1111 and a pair of P0171 codes that have suddenly vanished.

I just tried this rather simple program and it did connect and report some codes.

It didn't but once I pick the software I want I could try clearing the codes and see if it reappears.
The p0171 still shows as having occurred but no longer active so I guess that will erase itself over time if nothing triggers it again?
Do these tools clear pending stuff?

Not much point clearing. Pending go very fast unless they recur - which you'd want to know about. Even the other will go after 40 or 80 warmups. But tools generally let you clear. It will also clear other things relating to the monitors which most of the times is OK but for some poor souls leaves them in a bind where codes can't get flagged. The general rule is don't clear without having done a repair.

I was thinking of clearing them because I wondered if this was all caused by a slight issue with the last gas fill up before I got the check engine light and if no pending or hard codes show up then I might be OK.
I've been looking closely at two systems out there. The Palmer Performance Scan XL looks like it's been around a while and is the most professional but I had problems with it getting mixed up or losing communications with the Elm 327. It also takes a long time to find the bluetooth dongle on my PC and then finally establish contact with the OBDII system. It does show access to more ECUs. Though their free mode is so restricted that the only thing is displays is the VIN # and when traversing the menu in any way it puts you through the registration request prompt where you have to wait several seconds for it to timeout before it will go into freebie mode which is worthless.
I guess they got tired of people using it in freebie mode so this is a big FU to anyone who's trying to evaluate it. I get that but it's a bit off putting and arrogant. If their handshaking was quick and seamless I'd be more impressed. This feels like an old and not so well constructed piece of software. But it probably is the more capable of the two?
If you switch the Elm327 to another vehicle you seem to have to delete the BT dongle device from your PC, add it back in and then pair it all over again with the Elm. Otherwise it never seems to make contact.
Lots of players involved in all of this connection so it's hard for me to be certain.

Establishes contact in about 1/10th of the time. I have a feeling there aren't nearly as many layers of system and datacomm modules (which they probably bought from another vendor) involved so it's a a much more efficient less buggy design. Just an impression.
I'm just not qualified enough to know if it's actual collection and reporting capabilities are "good enough" when compared tho Palmer's low end product.

Clearing them is only a small risk that the monitors get stuck. I've seen it, though, and even if small it's a real pain if it happens. I'd probably do it but I've got advanced tools were it to happen to me!
I've done what I can to quit Windows, just have an ancient XP non-internet system for the few things I occasionally might need, so I really have no input on any tools for it. There's a big thread in General Tech about OBD tools, don't recall who posted what about things on Windoze. I think some people just live with the very basic freebies. Most of the time our cars don't throw any complicated codes so I guess freebies are mostly enough.

I looked at the list of approved OBDII tools thread but it was mostly just that, hardware tools and not a discussion of software packages.
The freebie stuff was mostly XP or lower though I did try one newly listed free package. Then spent hours cleaning off all the crap that loaded on my machine with it!
Apple will not work with the ELM bluetooth unless you use a jailbreak which I did a while ago. It was such a PITA back then and in looking at it again the other day I think it still is. Not worth the hassle.
If you want to go Apple best to buy the high priced Apple authorized stuff.
Not for me.

I use the Scan XL software but it's not the evaluation version. Seems to get nearly everything and I also use the special Ford package on top of the standard package. I think you can load all the different packages if you want to? I could only find the Ford package so that's all I have.
Ford owned Jaguar and I have found that choosing the Ford option usually gets me close to the Jaguar stuff.
Sorry the evaluation version is no good. I have done some nice graphing and have posted them before.

I was looking at the Scan XL standard which is about $90 the pro is $140 and both of those are in the generic OBD-II class.
The Scan XL - Enhanced Ford is $100 which sounds like what you have?
It will clearly have more functionality that that other package I'm considering.
Yes, their free trial is not terribly helpful in trying to see how the software works, it only returns one thing - Vin #. But the datacomm seems like it might be troublesome.
This phrase on their website made me a bit leery

Well I've been attempting to work with the folks at Palmer to get a basic question answered and these people leave a lot to be desired.
When I mentioned that you used the Ford enhanced version they informed me that it will not return any of the Jaguar specific codes. But what was galling is that I was asking this very basic question because it's not clear on their website.
1. Does the ScanxL Ford Enhanced add on include the basic Scan XL package or do I have to buy both?
Here's the response I got:
"ScanXL Standard does not include Ford Enhanced. Ford will not cover Jaguar enhanced data. We have zero people that have not been able to get their license. We do generate them manually, so it will take a few hours to receive and sometimes we go to the spam filter. Any person that has emailed saying they did not get the license was given their license. We never lose them, we have a record of all of them.

On the positive side it does recognize my el cheapo Elm327.
I don't think many packages do.
The freebie ScanTool.net (as downloaded from their website) outright refuses to talk with it and let's you know most emphatically. The older version that came with this Elm327 does but getting it to communicate is quite herky jerky.
I suspect a better version of the Elm is probably needed.
Scan XL did recognize my 99K2500 Suburban it also recognized my Jag.
I have a bigger need for usage on the Suburban at the moment.
OBD Auto Doctor doesn't recognize the Suburban and it's far more limited anyway.
