Default Parking Brake

2005 S Type Parking Brake Fault

Car runs, rides like a dream. The PB light stays on after starting. The fault light and alarm remains on in drive. This is driving everyone crazy.

I don't mind paying for a module replacement as I have read in the forum if this is a sure fix.

Are there any other proven repair ideas? Is it possible to disconnect a fuse?
Will driving while the fault light is on crate new damage or issues?

HELP, going crazy in Augusta.

AjPolo247,

I've moved this question from your Intro thread to S-Type forum. Members here with the same model will be able to help.

Which alarm stays on?

The module is NOT a sure fix unless it is the faulty part, which usually it isn't. Read previous threads...

Check to see how old your battery is. A failing battery is known to cause parking brake errors.

Follow Rick's advice. A dying battery in these cars tends to cause many spurious faults. False parking brake warnings is one of them....

+1.

There's all sorts of more likely causes than the module.

I assume you've already performed the reset and calibration procedures.....but perhaps I assume too much? If so, that's where I'd start, followed by a quick visual isnpection of the cables for integrity right before I headed out for a new battery....ijs

Thx for the quick response.

In park: dashboard yellow light is on. The dash reads above the mileage that it is unable
to put brake on.
In drive: Dashboard yellow light remains on. A beep sounds while driving. The beep only stops when the car stops. The fault message reads: Brake light on.
There is a smell like something is burning.

I will try the battery replacement next.

Thx again for the advice.

Hi,
I also have problems with my park brake not working but after a few weeks of investigation have now almost sorted the problem. I cant give you a definate answer to your question but can say this. My park brake module had failed. Because of this failure it had no communication to the vehicle. The result being no beeping when driving away! The fact that you have beeping and a message saying Park brake light on when driving away would lead me to believe your module is at least partly working so I would concentrate on going through the park brake set up procedure. Also your burning smell could be your brakes stuck on. I would also start with checking the fuses.
Hope you get it sorted
John.

Might want to check this. In mine. The Parking Brake Position Switch (under the center console) would click every time I hit the brakes. After inspecting it, it was SUPER hot to the touch. I replaced it and no more error and no more clicking. Worth a try.

Your brakes are certainly STUCK ON, hence the burning smell. The beeping you get while in motion usually indicates the parking brake is stuck on.

Check the battery, and perform the EPB reset/calibration procedure.

If that doesn't fix it, you need to bring the car in for service. Not sure how the non-R EPB looks like, but you could consider disconnecting the EPB cables on your own, in order to allow you to keep driving the car/drive it directly to the shop, otherwise, you need to consider having it towed!

Jack the car up, remove the wheels and have a helper apply/release the EPB. Tell us what you see and hear.
