Default Replacement transmission ......?

New to the forum and need help desperately. Hello everyone my name is Stephen and I currently own a 2005 Jag S-type 4.2 non R model. Previously had an 05 X-Type, but needed more power. 2 weeks ago I drove the car to my in-laws to lend a hand, but time to leave the car gears will not engage. I change the transmission oil and installed new pan w/filter and connector sleeve, but same issue. I was going to put in new solenoids but decided to towed it to the ******* for diagnostic. They called me today to say that it would cost about $14,000.00 for a new transmission installed. I can get a used one, but I am not sure what is up with the VIN. Does it really matter what my VIN is in order to get one that would work with my car? My VIN ends in N21219 and has about 150000 miles on it. Please help. Before all this started, the car was hard shifting and will get stuck in 3rd or 4th. Please, please help.

You may want to have the car taken to another shop as that does seem excessive for a gearbox overhaul.

The gearbox fitted to your car is the ZF 6HP26 and the VIN is needed to verify the unit is correct for your MY and engine type.

Are all ZF 6HP26 not the same? I'm curious because I had purchased a 2005 Jag X-type 3.0 with a bad fuel pump a few years back. The same dealer wanted $1,800.00 to get it replaced. I was able to remove a fuel pump from a 3.0 Ford Taurus housing and installed it in mine. The car ran perfectly until I wrecked it this past winter. I'm just trying to find out what would make a ZF 6HP26 from a 2008 S Type not work in a 2005 S Type.

Get transmission from junk yard. It takes about 1 hour for a good mechanic to replace rear wheel drive transmission.

I found a low mileage one on a 2005 XJ8, and plan on installing it myself. Trying to find out if it will work before I learn the hard way. The VIN is G33566 and mine is N21219.

There you go. I'm all about saving money on certain things as long as the alternate yields the same or better result.

Thanks Bob! I'm having the vehicle picked up from the *********** this weekend. I will definitely give this a try before acquiring a new transmission as my VIN does fall within M45255- and 52047.

I will definitely not let that happen. I was hoping they would give me a proper diagnostic, that's why I took it there. I've heard of some only replacing the solenoids to resolve similar issue. I also have Buick Enclave where I was experiencing an issue with hard shifting and being stuck in third. The GM dealer confirmed that it was a broken wave plate which I was able replace on my own. It seem like the Jag dealer just wants to rob me.

Hey, as I just said in another thread, what about visiting a local BMW shop? Those cars have the same tranny as us (i.e., the ZF) but there are many more of them, so BMW shops should have lots of experience diagnosing and servicing them.

Any trans place should know this box by now as it's in all manner of cars, even Fords & Audis as well as Bentleys.

Many or most may not be able to reflash with the jag software but that's something a jag dealer shouldn't be a crazy price to do.

Default *****she roars again*****

Since I couldn't find the answer regarding the VIN compatibility, I just went ahead and got a used transmission from a 2004 XJ whose VIN was compatible with mine according to the scrap yard. I had it installed (did not do the work myself) by a body shop I've worked with in the past since it was just a matter of swapping the trannies. I installed a new pan, new connector sleeve and used Motorcraft Mercon SP ($6.49/quart at a local Ford dealership). It took 8 quarts. I've put over 400 miles on it so far with no issues. Did not need to reflash apparently it just needed to learn my driving habit. So far everything is great.
