Default Your experiences with Magnaflow 59975 cats and 10790 x-pipe ?

Does anybody have dyno pulls (or close to same temperature 1/4 mile drag times) before and after changing to high flow Magnaflow 59975 catalytic converters? I see current prices ranging from $96 to $149 each.

Has anybody liked using other manufactures high flow cats?

Last, was the engine's noise level (or tone) a lot different after the change?

The noise...er, growl is increased with the Magnaflow hi-flow cats. My butt dyno and kills "know" the motor has been unleashed. Check for my soon to be released post on the prelude to an upcoming ECU dyno-tune which will benefit all.

Thanks for the feedback bfsgross.

I installed a new cat back exhaust system (Jaguar S-Type Performance Exhaust for Jaguar S-Type Mina Gallery) almost a year ago with no problem but these catalytic converters from Magnaflow appear to require welding to install. So it is likely not a DIY install.?.?.?

How much was done and at what cost at the muffler shop to have these Magnaflow catalytic converters installed?

I am looking forward to getting my car back from the dealer this week with the new cats installed and I'm curious how it will run. Like most STR driver's I would like more performance along (with a little more growl during full acceleration) so I may sell the factory converters on ebay or on this forum.

Looking forward to seeing your ECU dyno tune results. Yeah baby!

Bryan, the hi-flow cat install is basically straight forward and relatively not expensive. Perform a hard re-set of the ECU after cat install. Use the stock O2 sensors. If your ride has more than 75k miles, you may want to swap in new O2 sensors then perform a hard re-set of the ECU. Mine are going in tomorrow. Upon start up you'll be pleasantly surprised by the immediate authoritive growl and much improved throttle response. I had a hard time not getting out of the car the first day of the full exhaust mod because of the intoxicating exhaust notes and the improved acceleration, mid and top end. Go for it!

bfsgross

The 2.25 inch Magnaflow cats and x-pipe are on order.

Amazon.com: Magnaflow 59975 Universal Catalytic Converter (Non CARB compliant): Automotive

Amazon.com: Magnaflow 10790 Tru - X Stainless Steel 2.25" Exhaust Pipe: Automotive

Now I need to locate:
a) a reputable dyno outfit for before 3 pulls before and after the installation;
b) a good muffler shop to weld it all together.Did you purchase O2 bungs (x4) before going to have everything installed? If so, from where?

Awesome! You'll see a much noticeable difference after the "Full Exhaust Mod". The installer provided the O2 sensor ports (welded to pipe-O2 sensors are screwed into them). I used the original O2 sensors...a mistake, as they had 90k miles on them at the time of full exhaust mod-install. Yesterday fresh Bosche O2 sensors were installed...what a huge difference!. No more surging until warmed up, improved shifting, and smoother and more powerful throughout the RPM ranges. I'd recommend fresh O2's when coming close to the 80K miles mark.

Keep us posted on pre and post full exhaust mod dyno pulls...the fun is about to begin.

Did none, one or both of your catalytic converter fail before you went with the Magnaflows?
Did you have any codes?
Did the cat break up inside and you could hear it?

Default STR dyno tomorrow afternoon

I am going to have my car placed on the dyno tomorrow at PTunniing Virginia, Maryland, Dyno Tuning, AWD Dyno, Dyno Dynamics, COBB Tuning | PTUNING (877-788-6464).

The following day (after being rescheduled a few times already) high flow cats and x-pipe will be installed at MBS Performance Exhaust Maryland -- MBS is your Maryland source for custom performance exhaust.

Magnaflow 59975 Universal Catalytic Converter (Non CARB compliant)

Magnaflow 10790 Tru - X Stainless Steel 2.25" Exhaust Pipe

I plan to have another dyno day after all is tested and working as I like. I'll let you know how things turn out.

My STR was run on a Dyno Dynamics (A.K.A. Heart Breaker) dyno yesterday when it was 84F. The first two pulls were in 4th and was told they had some issues getting a good pull. The next 3 pulls were done in 3rd gear with numbers ranging from ~325hp to a 337hp max. The only torque number I have was 318trq.@4250 rpm. I will post all the numbers and the vid later.

I'm currently at MBS where the x-pipe and hf cats are being installed. I was warned that it may be too loud so space has been left to install a set of resonators.

Brian, those are normal (healthy) hp numbers for a stock STR on a Dyno Dynamics dyno. Likely would have been 355 rwhp if on a Mustang dyno. The exhaust will be mucho louder without a pair of resonators. Use 14" to 18" resonators for a pleasant "Cabin" melody whilst still sounding mean on the outside. I'm leaning to replacing the 14" Magnaflow resonators with a pair of 18" resonators due to a little too much for my taste in/out noise. Keep us posted on the high flow cat/x-pipe install. I'm sure you'll be surprised by the almost instant throttle response and gains in hp/trq. The 3 lb pulley was the biggest noticeable power adder in my book. When the intercooler is cold I get instant big trq. right out of the hole...slams ya back kind of trq. You'll def. need a "Chiller Killer" for the 3 lb.-er cause the fun only lasts near 40 minutes, then she becomes heat soaked.

Sorry to take us back to September, but I am interested in doing the following setup and am curious how loud this would be keeping everything else stock? I am not going for a loud sound all the time, but quiet until WOT with a subtle growl and am hoping to achieve that with this setup. Thoughts?

Magnaflow 59975 Universal Catalytic Converter (X2)

Magnaflow 10790 Tru - X Stainless Steel 2.25" Exhaust Pipe (X1)

MagnaflowRound Straight - DOUBLE-WALL TIPS > 35124 (X2)

Thanks

On one of my oem cats there was a rattle inside of them; honeycomb mesh was broken aPart inside. To make story short, I replaced them with hi flow cats and did the whole exhaust mod with magna flows w/ resonators deleted. Just like bfsgross said it made a huge enjoyable difference. Only thing is I reused my Old o2 sensors which were still good.

rasputin, the list you jotted down is a good place to start. Retain the stock 2 1/4" pipe.

bfsgross, 1320racer
When you did your "full exhaust mod" what was the full list of parts that you had to change? Did you change eventually change your resonators?
I'm trying to get an idea of everything that would need to be replaced to get a nice growl without making too much noise.

Depends on how much you want to spend. There are other companies since you would have to be buying universals. Magnaflow just makes one that is almost identical to the way the stock ones are so its easier to just cut out the old weld in the new with new O2 bungs. The cats on the STR leave the cat at an angle so the cat is almost like a built in elbow.

Was wondering around the XK subforum, and headed over to the Nameless Performance website. It looks like they finally developed a set of downpipes w/cats for the STR. A little spendy, but the XK guys swear by them.

For people living in california its very hard to get these cats. I have a few on order and should have them installed in the next few days. I currently have a P0430 code.
