During my holiday, I disconnected the battery. It was disconnected for about 7 days. When I returned, I've noticed no more battery drain.

What I mean by that is that since my return, I've been using the visor light mirror method to observe when the car sleeps and when it awakes. I've driven the car to work the last 3 days and during my 12 hours shifts - i keep going out to check if the light comes back on (it turns off after 45 min as designed). Each day the light stays off during the whole 12 hours ...which is pretty good. I've been double checking by measuring the voltage of the battery when I go into work and come back out 12 hours later. I'm seeing about a 0.2V drop from about 12.85 to 12.65. That's fine.

I'm wondering if having the battery disconnected for 7 days did something to reset the modules or the ECU. I'm sure it means the capacitors probably are depleted. Don't know how long this will last.

cheers
Scott
You did the right thing, sometimes you just have to step away and return refreshed later.

And you are doing the right thing in monitoring it periodically the way you are. At some point I suspect it may show up again, but until then, relax a little.

As far as the long battery disconnect doing something.......you just never know when you are dealing with homotrons! [that's queer electrons!]

Cheers,

Yikes.... new UPDATE:
the battery drain has not re-appeared yet... BUT ... the sunroof is not working. Hmmm. I checked the assoc 20A fuse in the boot. That was not blown.

Is this a sign of a problem from a module? or does anyone have another thought?
so close !!!
cheers

Bugger me !!!

Update - the battery drain is back. It does go down to the 0.8A after 30 min but not down all the way. I've disconnected the battery now and will deal w/ it in the morning - its 2am here now.
Time to watch the Man City v Arsenal match.

XJR - I need to take it back to the auto elec techs this week - I have a stupid question - just so I know how to do it myself - when you said we needed to test those wires on the RECM and GEM - how do i position my DVOM for that, ie, what goes to what? (eg, does the pos go to the module terminal and black to ground on the car to get a voltage reading ) And the elec guide says for example the wire is BO - is that black/orange?

thanks again...

The guide will have a key about colours (but prob as you say). DVOM on V setting (*) doesn't care - you'll just get -x instead of +x if you have the leads swapped (try it on the battery and see).

That's DC V

Well, you almost have it.
Look at the attachment, the two wires to backprobe with a voltmeter are in the ovals, [orange/green and orange/black] one of which was described in the bulletin I posted. The two in the rectangles, [black/white and black/orange] are the ones I put connectors in so I can isolate the modules one at a time.

If the voltage at the first two wires is ALWAYS equal to battery voltage, move on to the other two. If the car ALWAYS goes to sleep and stays asleep with one of the black wires disconnected, that module is the one that is keeping the car awake.

Yes, the first two wires should be probed with the red lead, and the black lead on a good ground.

If it STILL continues to wake up, move on and disconnect the door modules one at a time.

Good luck!

any thoughts as to if there is a connnection between the sunroof not working and any assoc module. I looked in the elec guide, and i see a connection to the RECM for the sliding roof mechanism.

I'm just stumped. When I feel like I'm getting ahead... i'm just sliding backwards.

cheers and thanks again

I'm pretty sure that is a separate issue. The circuits to the rear control module are there for global open and close functions, nothing more. I'd pass on the sunroof functions until you get to the bottom of the power draw.

Don't get too frustrated, just be sure you do the things, or have them done, as we've described and per the bulletin, step by step. That is a strategy that works.

Cheers,

Here's how you get at the GECM. It's in the same place whether LHD or RHD. It's just ahead of the LF door, behind the trim panel.

Cheers,

Update:
I'm still in a holding pattern now - when I posted about 5 days ago and I was seeing the battery drain again - I disconnected the battery for 12 hours, and since then the battery drain disappeared again.

Who knows - I'd be pretty happy if all it takes is to disconnect the battery for a few hours to see the drain disappear for 4-6 days (or more).

An update on my AGM battery which I removed 2 weeks ago. I put that on my CTEK 5A charger, and almost 18 hours later it was still in Stage 3, which leads me to believe I was under charging it for months which led to some of the problems why I would come out to the car 12 hours later and the battery would be dead (that was also before I bought my DVOM).

cheers....Merry Christmas to all

UPDATE:
the battery drain has not returned yet. I'm not sure when or if it will come back.
the next thing i need to do is find out why my sunroof is not working. I am wondering if there is a connection between the sunroof not working and the disappearance of the battery drain.

Of course I checked the fuse. I'm worried it could be another failed module. I'd hate to try and find that one. It looks like its in the roof.

Sadly, as soon as i fix this ...I'm going to sell the car. Its too difficult to keep a car like that in the outback.
cheers,
Scott

Default Battery Drain.

I have an S-TYPE R and the head lights flash when the car is locked. I have taken it to the garage and they fitted a new battery but it still goes flat if the car is left more than a few days, can anyone help?

Go back up this thread to post #11. You may need to go introduce yourself in the New Member forum and get a few posts under your belt. Then you can access the bulletins in that post. Forget the VIN Range listed, what you describe can happen even after that listed in the bulletin. Sounds like a classic case of loss of battery power to the front electronics module.

Good luck!

Question Parasitic Drain... Checked all the fuses... now what?

Hello Gentlemen:

I too have a power drain. When the car isn't driven the battery goes DEAD within a few days. I went in to replace the battery at a local mechanic and, instead of selling me a battery, they hooked it up to their computer and it passed all tests with flying colors... a full computer diagnostic said it was fine.

My tech tested ALL the fuses with the car off. No fuses showed any current. Checked all 5 fuse boxes.

The poor guy also jumped into the trunk and let me shut him inside to check to see if the trunk light goes off when closed. (What a sport. I felt like Tony Soprano.) Light went out.

I'm not the first owner, and to my knowledge, there's nothing aftermarket (electronics) installed.

Now what?

Thank you,

SirJag

Just for grins, check your car according to this bulletin. I have run into this condition on many cars, even some later models like yours. It can flatten a battery overnight. May not pan out, but it's worth a try.

Cheers,

Thanks so much. I sent the pdf to my mechanic and we'll do the tests.

Will post the results.

Thanks again.
