Default 01 S-type Transmission maybe..R N D problems

Hi everyone..I have some problems and could really use some thoughts to ease my mind..I have a 01 S-type v6...I was driving along everything was fine then all of a sudden the car shuddered to a stop and it had stalled out..I put the car in park restarted it everything was fine no warning lights all gauges normal. But when I put the car in gear nothing if i gave it some gas it would lurch a bit shudder maybe a clunk or popping noise but no go..same in Drive and reverse neutral would not roll..at this point I'm thinking transmission or breaks locked up..was towed home and by that time it had been a hour or so the tow truck driver got it off the truck in reverse so for some reason it worked then..he said neutral also worked but no drive. A few hours have passed I went to see whats the deal so I know what to say at the repair shop..So no Drive just a lurching ..its on a slight downgrade in neutral didn't roll freely and I didn't push..But reverse it moved a few feet I didn't try to go any farther but it did make some popping noise...

So I'm thinking transmission..But the noise sounded like more front end..nothing looked out of wack from a quick glance from above..

Has anyone had anything similar or have any thoughts...

Thanks...Gary

How many miles are on the vehicle?

Is the MIL on and if so, what DTCs are stored in the system?

The vehicle is fitted with the 5R55N gearbox, which requires servicing every 60 thousand miles. Has the gearbox been recently serviced, or has other work been recently completed?

Hi thanks for the reply this has me so flustered I can hardly think straight...it has 137,550 miles..I have had the transmission serviced once I wanna say at around 90,000 miles but it was more then a service but i cant remember all the details at the moment..

The only recent work was a 4 wheel alignment about 100 miles ago and some touch up paint..

MIL I dont know what that refers to sorry..

The shift cable may have stretched, the early S-Types are known for it at this sort of age.

To confirm this, watch the indicator lights (P, R, N, D) at the base of the shift lever. These indicators are driven by feedback coming from the transmission, NOT the shift lever itself. If the cable is loose, has stretched or is otherwise out of adjustment, the shift lever won't land in the correct spot on the bezel. If you put the lever into any of the detents, as normal, the transmission innards may only be partway in the respective position.

For troubleshooting, ignore the detents on the bezel for now. Keep your foot on the brake and apply the parking brake. Start the engine. Move the lever aft towards neutral and note the position when R goes out and N illuminates. Now move the lever aft again and note the position when N goes out and D illuminates.

The middle of travel, between these points, is when the transmission innards are in neutral. If the cable is in good condition and adjusted properly, the shift lever will conveniently land in the N detent. If not, the cable is either loose or had stretched, and will need some love.

EDIT: I forgot to mention you should repeat this test, but this time while moving the lever forward. If all is good with the cable, the indicator lights will switch over at the same points and be aligned with the detents in the bezel. If the changeover points are substantially different, you’ve got a loose or stretched cable.

Malfunction Indicator Lamp/Light, often incorrectly referred to as 'CEL' or 'check engine light'.

Thanks everyone for your help.I was able to catch the problem as i was having it put on the tow truck to the transmission shop. It was a brake caliber the had come off and was binding in the rim locking everything up. CRAZY CRAZY...found that the caliber was missing a bolt got a new bolt and its back on the road ..

Thanks...Gary

I'd say someone did a "repair" very dangerously badly.

Yeah that's a fact...The other thing that's so weird I haven't had the brakes worked on in months...so its not like I just got them looked at the other day...Just crazy...For sure something I will always ask about (lock tight)..
