Sorry to hear about your loss.
As all modern cars by law must have OBD-II, a scanner will be reusable for years so I'd get one and study all the car's readings - but especially the basics (monitors, fuel trims, MAF, ECT, IAT etc) and of course the O2 waveforms.
An ELM327 with (say) EngineCheck is a good and cheap investment (but with all the modules in my car I went for AutoEnginuity).
(You can use a DSO ('scope) if you have one but access and heat are a pain.)
