03 S-Type R - 1st gear shifting @ 6100?
#41
I am taking my car to the track tonight guys so well see what it runs with the improved shift points. I took out the spare and jack and removed the pretty engine cover on top of the cooling tanks to let some of the heat out to keep them cooler. Tonights temps will be in the 50s so should be a good run. Once I get there shes going on some ice to cool down the car from the 30 min. drive I have. Will report back with results. This will be my 3rd car to run on this track, previous was my 2000 Trans-Am and 99 Jag XJR. Trans am best-13.1, XJR best 13.2. I am hoping for a 12.9 but probably not.

track results
Alright guys ran at the track tonight. Temp was in the low 50s. Keep in mind this is my first time at the track with this car and launching it. Items removed from the car were the jack and spare tire. Other then that car is completely stock with a paper filter. I ran 36 psi in the front and 26 psi in the rear tires. Race weight is a crazy 4,195lbs!! This car is damn heavy. My TA and XJR came in at 3800lbs.
First run rear tires at 19psi and I was totally not ready to go and didn't stage right, ice on cooling tanks and intake:
1/4: 13.9 mph: 104.71 60ft: 2.5 Got killed by a 11.6 second Wrx that blew up!! lol.
Horrible run for me but a good starting point.
Second run, car sat a little to cool down and had ice on the intake and cooling tanks, Launched much better and car felt real good.
1/4: 13.1 mph: 105.97 60ft: 1.97 (best 60ft time I thnk I have done and on a open rear end no less!) Killed a Evo!
Third run, car didn't sit as long to cool down and slipped on the launch:
1/4: 13.4 mph: 105.27 60ft: 2.08--killed a Honda civic that ran a 15-lol.
So all in all I am impressed that this bone stock car that weighs soo much can run a 13.1!!!! When I launch I don't power brake I let in to the throttle then mash it seems to keep wheelhop down. I also ran on stock street tires and didn't burn the tires before running-waste of tire.
Before I ran I was getting looks from the import crowd and people at the gate asked me if I was spectating..I was like hell no I am racing. Then I had a fan club. People were watching me run and were like damn man you ran a 13.1?? Then I would respond with yeah and the car weighs 4,195lbs!!!
Overall goodnight. I think with the following I should be able to get into the mid 12s.
Intake, pulley, intercooler fan and exhaust work. Car needs some more air up top.

I read this article from an old Road and Track Magazine when the tested the 2003 Jaguar S type R the authors name is Frank Markus. I hope this helps out the question of why they dont shift at redline at the 1,2 and 3rd gear.

OK, so i've been thinking about this for a while. My car still does not continue to shift close to redline. After an ECU reset, it will shift @ around 6k for a little while - maybe 1-2 days but then it goes back to normal granny shifting at 5200-5500.
My car does seems to have some of "the lurch" issues so I don't think it's had any of the transmission related updates. It quite possibly has the stock TCM program from the factory (bought it used). My question is for ones whos car is still shifting @ 6k+ - have you had any of the TCM updates? I'm wondering if one of the newer TCM updates my be key to making it permanent.
I've been thinking of taking mine to the dealer to have TSB S307-17 done.
"To eliminate the issues outlined in the summary the transmission adaptions must be cleared and the Transmission Control Module (TCM) and the Engine Control Module (ECM) should be re-configured using the Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) with software release JTP 759/35 or later. "
Is that the latest update for the transmission?

Well i had the transmission re-flash and the car is shifting in first at about 5250 and second 5750
whats the latest on this are there still STR owners running round with 1st and 2nd shifts at 6k?? possibly going on a 1/4 mile run at the end of this month at Santa pod and would like to get the car using all its power.
Cheers peoples.

Nothing more complicated than pulling away......1st gear........floor it on a nice quiet road......changes inti 2nd and so on.......you can see when its changing gear when the needle peeks and it shifts into the next gear......if youre that worried about glancing down......employ the serivices of your wife/husband/mate etc, to watch the rev counter.
Its a rough gestimate but you can definately notice that its no where near the 6100 limit!!!

On a previous car (maybe also this one), you could brake so hard that the needles were unable to react quickly enough. Once stationary there was time to see them move to zero.
Could it not be that the tacho is unable to move fast enough (due to damping, for example)?
Better to find an OBD way to see what's happening, surely. Or some other certain way. Ideas, anyone?

This is a well known problem/difference. My 2005 STR shifts at redline in all gears when floored. 6100+ rpm. The 2003 is the worse as far as short shifting out of 1st and 2nd. no one has really fixed this. I am trying to find out if any of the few after market ECM retunes will affect this or not?
If any one has been reflashed let the list know how it turned out??

Any 'lasting' resolutions to this?
I read through the post this morning, and am wondering if anyone has a lasting solution to the shift points. Seams in most cases that disconnecting battery only has the desired effect for a few days.
Also; is there any way in the Jgate to force 1st gear?

I have heard that an overnight disconnect of the battery is needed, so much so that the radio loses it's station memory as well as it's code. It might be an idea to check all the battery connexions, ground straps, engine ground, heavy current output connector on alternator etc. Sounds far-fetched I know, but these subtle bad connexions CAN disturb any microprocessor-based control system. This doesn't mean I condone driving at such furious speeds needing 6000rpm...

Man I gotta give this a shot over the weekend....sounds almost too good to be true. See if I can get these brand new Continental Extreme Contact DWS tires (which are totally awesome for this car btw) to light up through 1st and 2nd.
Sanyo...btw.....unlike normally aspirated motors, forced induction cars (turbocharged and supercharged) do not lose any horsepower at altitute.
