Over $112,000 "invested" in this car ????

Far too many folks out there with absolutely no understanding of "spending" vs. "investing". Economics 101 and 201 would be a wise "investment" for this guy....

 

Nice car but a bit pricey. I don't think he spent anywhere close to $112K though. That would mean he spent as much on goodies as the original price of the car. If he did, then I don't know who is dumber, him or the guy with the orange ricer on Youtube.

Grammar or sentence constructs are not the issue here - pure economics is. With extremely rare exceptions, automobiles are not investments. They are expenses. If you believe you're investing when you choose to drop thousands in upgrades or supposed improvements, you're in denial. And for some, full-fledged delusional....

Even politicians talk about "invest" when really they mean "spend" (or waste!). Just read it either way

For a wasting asset such as a car, most of it is "spend" if you're looking at it from an economic perspective, but so what.

Searanch apparently got his panties in a wad for being called out on "invest" vs. "spend" so he took his ball and went home....

 

Whatever you spend on a car, you won't see it again...trust me!
That's why I'm such a tightarse around cars. Still like my machinery to work properly though...

In my search for an '03 STR a local guy had a BEAUTIFUL STR with less than 25K miles. He put a lot into it including a custom two tone paint job, custom borla exhaust, aftermarket chrome rims, h&r springs, lamborghini doors, etc etc.... He wanted 20K for it claiming that he began asking for 35K lowered it to 30, 25, etc over the course of the last year, and that he just couldn't go any lower than 20K because he would lose too much money. I made him a VERY good private party offer which he rejected. About a month later he called me back willing to talk. By that time I had already purchased a nice ORIGINAL STR with less than 35K miles on it.

I agree with all the aforementioned comments. What you spend on your car, do not EVER expect to get back from a buyer, unless you're talking about a rare classic restoration or something of the kind.

 

Why did Searanch get upset? It's not his car for sale is it? I thought he had a white one.

I think Searanch was just posting the add to help others that might be looking for a nice STR. Most of us do this from time to time.
He posted the add word for word based on the original>

Calling a guy out on wording is wrong, he didn't even choose the words.

On the word invest, it can be taken in many ways. I invest allot of my time for reasons that I don't want or look for a return. The word spend can be inserted where invest is used most of the time.
I invest in the stock market only as a gamble, just like going to the horse races nothing is certain. I invest in Real Estate hoping to make equity on the property,nothing is certain.
401K is an investment but not certain, we can and do lose allot of money in those ventures during down times.We can make allot in up times.

Investing in toys is usually a money losing venture.BUT how many of us know others who constantly deny themselves of lifes pleasures because it is impractical and a waist of money? I have known many older people who always put away for tomorrow and never treated themselves to a great vacation or toy or foolish life pleasing pleasure only to die before reaching their goal (whatever that goal was).
I certainly don't expect people do go into huge debt just to keep up with the neighbors but enjoy life today and worry about tomorrow just a little bit less and keep things in balance.
Nice car searanch, thanks for posting it. I hope someone can see past the dollars and enjoy a toy that some guy invested much time into.

My Grandfather proudly showed up at our house (when I was 2, so this is a re-tell) when he retired from being a milkman with a brand new 1967 Ford Thunderbird... That car was more money than most Caddies and Corvettes at over $5,500.. He always told us how my Dad was concerned that he and Grandma spent that much on a car..His response was classic. "Don't worry son, your inheritance is safe, I'll wash it every week." He always taught us to live as much as you can. Take care of what you need but still live. Sadly he passed many years ago at 88... But they were smart people..Grandma has plenty to live on and she is still with us at 95. And the 67 Bird has been restored on her dime (about 10 grand) and is sitting in her garage....Bet it's worth more than $15,500 now......(that includes the cost to buy and restore it)

 

I bet you wish it was a '57 T-Bird instead of a '67....

 

Nope.... It's almost the STR of it's day..... One of the smoothest driving cars I've ever been in...Yet is backed by the punch of a 390cid V8.

Never did like the early birds that much... And if that was meant as a "investment" tip..Well, Grandpa should of saved himself about $500 and bought a new Corvette...Yet as much as I love mid-year Vettes I'd still rather see the 67 Bird...

man you guys were pretty rough on searanch, investing versus spending is totally based on perception. I invest in preventative maintenance, because I see a long term value from it. That's all it is, putting money into something for something (intrinsic value)...how much, well that is up for debate.

I'm reminded of saying nothing at all when nothing nice can be said...or at least 'neutral' in tone.
