Reading thru the postings I found there is a special tool for inserting the half shaft. Is there a way to cheat this? I need to get the car moved.

 

There is a C-clip of sorts on the end of the axle's splines that keep them locked into the diff,

JTIS calls for a SST to defeat the clip and get the axle out of the diff, but I managed to get them out easily with just a pry-bar,

JTIS calls for replacing the C-clip, but reusing it seemed fine by me, axle clicks and locks right back into the diff with no special tools required.
