Default 04 S-Type 3.0 Question

Recently bought an 04 S-Type 3.0 and noticed an oil leak from the filter as well as a coolant leak. Took it to the shop for a spot check. They informed me that the oil leak was due to a bad filter. They replaced the filter and it stopped the oil leak. They also informed me that the A/C compressor was leaking badly and the radiator was cracked on both sides and leaking. I am wondering if the entire radiator needs to be replaced or if the left and right sides can just be replaced. I can't seem to find any information on this. Any help is appreciated.

dengland3, you'll need "another radiator"; meaning you can either purchcase a new or used radiatior from a new Jag parts dealer like "Jag Bits", etc. or a Jag salvage yard like Coventry West or Jaguar Heaven. I personally recommend Coventry West for a low mileage used radiator (much less $$$).

Thanks bfsgross! Do you recommend installing personally our outsourcing? I received a quote of $1,122 for parts and labor. I thought that was high, but this is my first Jag, so I wasn't sure if that was a good quote or not. I'm definitely outsourcing the A/C compressor. I don't believe that is something I would be able to do myself. The radiator on the other hand seems like a job I can tackle if I had the schematics to do so. Any thoughts?

You could get a new radiator on ebay for $100-$150, Antifreeze would be another $20ish so you will be under $200. I think the price you were quoted is really high. Changing the radiator should take an hour, maybe 2 tops depending on your comfort level. Just make sure to bleed it correctly.

Thanks xjrwithproblems! I thought so as well. Has anyone had to replace the A/C compressor? If so, what were you out of pocket and what skill level is required to replace it?

I've never had to replace the ac compressor on my jags, but I did on my bmw. If they are similar, in that they are in the front of the engine and propelled by a belt (which I assume so), that would be a fairly minor job as well. It would probably be best to tackle the compressor while you replace the radiator as you have that much more room to unbolt the compressor. I say go for it. It seems like you havn't gotten your hands too greasy in the past, fortunately, the two things you need to replace are fairly easy and straight forward. I urge you to get yourself familiar with your car, because things do go wrong, and being a jaguar, could cost you a lot. Also, get yourself a code reader and frequent this site. Had it not been for the help in this community, I would have been stuck with a large bill several times.

Did the shop mean the a/c radiator or the engine coolant radiator? Just checking
Neither of them are at all common failures on S-Types so I'd check it really is faulty.
I'd allow a lot more than an hour or two. (There was a write-up in Car Mechanics & the same one in Jaguar World Monthly not long ago of changing the coolant rad due to it "sagging".)

Read old threads especially the forum stickies (incl FAQs) and you'll find out about the workshop manual as well as many other useful things.

alldatadiy is calling for 4.5 hours to replace the radiator. The job looks pretty straight forward. The front of the vehicle will have to raised in the process. As stated above use the correct bleed (purge) procedure and the CORRECT coolant.

Since the vehicle will be in the air, I would tackle the AC compressor as well. The belly pan has to come of for the radiator removal and the pump is right there. There are 4 bolts holding the pump to the block, 2 are easily accessible, 2 are abit more of a PIA to get too. A long socket extension and a universal joint will help to get at those 2 bolts. To replace compressor will take an hour, not including refridgerant.

You will find a lot of good info in this thread - https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...ght=compressor

jagv8, they didn't specify. I didn't know their were differences. I asked the mechanic to show me where it was leaking from. He popped the hood and pointed at the left and right sides of the radiator and said both sides were cracked about half way down and leaking. He said it was due to the aluminum brackets holding the radiator (holding where there is plastic). He said over time it wears and that's the reason for the leaking. Sound right?

It's a new one for these cars, as far as I know, if true.

There are 2 large radiators in a sort of sandwich, the front is for the a/c. (3 if an STR, when the front is for the SC.)

One side of the coolant rad tends to be for the tranny.
