Default 2.5 vs 3.0 fuel consumption

Hey a few people have been telling me that the 3.0 s type uses way more fuel than the 2.5 . Anybody agree disagree and why. I've been blown away by how good on gas my 2.5 is. Does the 3.0 have the same awesome growl as the 2.5 ?

You might want to update your profile to include your general location, as you will begin to get MPG responses in both US and Imperial gallons; this will get a bit confusing.

As a FYI, the 2.5 was never sold "across the pond," so responses may be a bit limited...

Frankly I don't believe it and would be very dubious about the claim - I'd want to see solid evidence.

You're basically moving the same heavy lump that's the same shape...

Now, if the cars are different in ways that matter (thinner tyres? lighter wheels? etc), that would matter.

Also, if one car ran OL (open loop) that would ruin fuel consumption - use OBD to find out.

Did the 3 have noticeably more acceleration?

The 3.0 litre was always a much faster car than the 2.5, in pretty much all the Jaguar models it was found in.
2.0 seconds quicker in the 0-100km/h sprint was a huge difference for the additional half a litre in capacity; 9.9 seconds for the 2.5 litre as compared to 7.9 seconds for the 3.0 litre.
And the 'city' fuel consumption numbers were identical at 11.0 litres per 100km.
These were the official Jaguar numbers on the launch of the x202.
You'd scratch your head to understand why Jaguar really offered the 2.5 in the first place (was a bit less on the carbon dioxide emissions) but it was more to do with competing with the usual rivals; pricing and model range.
Here in Australia you'd have to pay a $12,000 premium on the 2.5 litre if you wanted the 3.0 litre. Aside of great performance, you got a bit more for your money but not a great deal. Relative though to the period:
16" wheels
8-way driver with memory pack, 6-way passenger
wood/leather steering wheel
Cruise control, with audio and telephone controls on the steering wheel
front cup holders and power point
memory pack: for drivers seat with entry/exit function, door mirrors, steering column and adjustable foot pedals (if fitted).
It was a similar story with the X Type. It had no V8 (unfortunately) but pricing point and competition would have dictated the introduction of the front wheel drive only 2.1 litre V6. That model sold well but compared to the AWD 3.0 litre it was an absolute slug..

i swapped a 3.0 instead of my 2.5 (i overheated the engine) and of course i added the 3.0 ecu too.
So, same car, same wheels, same everything, but different engine:
the 3.0 feels like its got more torque and doesn't need to downshift to accelerate.
Its faster than the 2.5 for sure.
again, i find the mpg to be better in my case with the 3.0, but i cleaned the engine, my o2 sensors and my catalysts.

I know there are people saying they dont feel the difference, but thats most likely because they drove something faster and got used to speed, and maybe were expecting more out of the 3.0. Dont forget its not a v8.
i wish not to disconsider the v6's performance, but a supercharger would help🤣

Btw, how come you ask?

I ask because I'm considering upgrading to a tidier s type which is a 3.0. Friend of mine and another chap have lectured me on the greater fuel consumption of the 3.0. I was skeptical.
I did wonder if the 2.5 was a short stroke version of the 3.0 and maybe quicker mid range. A little research tells me it's a bigger bore.
I'll test drive the 3.0 and compare. The 2.5 I have does 1600 revs at 100 k astounded me on its excellent fuel economy and I'm in love with its purr/ growl.

IF I drive mine around 55 mph on the highway I can get 30 mpg or better all day long. That being said, I didn't buy it for the gas mileage. I drive it like it's meant to be driven. Not like a maniac but "spirited driving" as they say. It's not a daily driver for me. I drive a company vehicle and don't pay for gas. I use that as an excuse to push the pedal on the right as needed to get me where I'm going.

It's not a rocket from a dead stop. But once it gets into second or third gear it goes, and keeps going, until it get's uncomfortable.

Drove a 3.0 yesterday. Both it and my 2.5 do 8.1 lyre per 100.
Both wife I were 100% our 2.5 had at least equal if not better acceleration 80k to 120 km. Road didn't allow higher speed
3.0 didn't have the same wonderful growl as ours.
Maybe ours has some mid or part of being an se.
I've read that Porche helped Ford design the Duratec

that means that specific car you drove was broken. Or yours loves you.

i had both. Same mpg, 3.0 is a bit faster.

where are you from?

Thing is, you cannot be sure that the car you would buy is operating well, so you just told us your 2.5 is doing well. Youd probably be better off with either keeping your 2.5 or getting a v8 one if you really want more power.
if taxes allow for owing a bigger engine.

If comparing the 2.5 with the 3.0, as long as they are the same generation, 3.0 is better, case closed

comparison between two cars is again full of parameters: ex: maintenance, oil, filters, the gas, injectors condition, tires, Transmission! Etc

ford bought this project from Porsche yeah, but jaguar did modify these engines too

When researching the two engine types for the same model year (2003) the 3.0 appears to be a full second faster in 0-100kph road tests over the 2.5 litre version. Roughly 40 h/p is a +/-20% bump in output from the additional displacement.

The 3.0 is a peach and growls nicely on my low mileage early model. If I put my foot down it goes like a scalded cat. Would I swap it for a 2.5? Not unless it had been Supercharged.

Would I prefer the 4.0 V8? Perhaps.

I think a well-maintained 3.0 V6 is a happy medium. It has plenty of power for road use and the soundtrack is lovely, but not intrusive. It could cruise at 100mph all day without breaking a sweat. One day someone may pry the keys to my Jag from my hand, but only after rigor mortis has set in.

If I had deep pockets I'd love a Supercharged V8. But I doubt I could afford the insurance, fuel and maintenance bills.

Interesting. The 3.0 I drove definitely didn't have the growl more of a whine. My 2.5 is plenty quick enough in all the right places and if it has to drop a cog to do it does it gracefully.
Always lifts my mood to be behind the wheel.

The whine may be alternator bearings. Mine had a whine before I changed the alternator and pulley bearings. The lack of growl could be related to a heavy carbon build-up in the exhaust. Was it high mileage?
If it lifts your mood, then all is good!
