This is my third S-Type. The first two (2000, 2002) did not have a problem with the flange. The current car did work itself loose (or wasn't tightened enough by the previous owner) on one bank. This triggered the MIL and a scan showed a lean condition on bank 1 (P0171). Tightening the bolts cured the problem. Others on this forum have reported similar experiences.
The flange bolts are one of the easiest parts of these cars to service. I'm not sure it would be worth the trouble to reconfigure the flange to manifold sealing.
