20 inch rims rubbing when I hit bumps

I recently bought a used 2006 S-Type that came with 20 inch rims on them and whenever I hit a bump or pothole they rub and the tire is being cut. I like the rims though and would rather lift the car a couple inches than downgrade in rim size. Has anyone had this problem before?

@s2, you will find lots of discussion about wheels and tyres, sizes etc. over in the S Type forum.
When you get there, try using the search facility in much the same way as you would use Google.
To give you an idea, here is a thread I pulled up a moment ago.

And if you don't find just what you are looking for, post up your question, to include a 'why, is this happening'?, hopefully you will avoid a yes/no response.

Are these 20" wheels sold as specifically suitable for an S-Type ? It sounds as if you may have got aftermarket wheels with the wrong offset, sold for another make of car. There are variations unfortunately that can cause problems like this, which is nothing new. Jaguar Mark 2 saloons from the 60s can have the same problems with tyres, especially radials.

Thank you for all of the help. They came with these http://www.wheelsnolimit.com/product...e/Default.aspx From everything I'm getting they are suitable for my car.

I have 20" wheels and tires myself, but if I were you, I'd replace those. You can get something attractive for under $1000 and retain your tires (assuming they are the right size). These cars take a pretty high offset and I would guess that the previous owner also put too wide of tires on there (like 255 or 265 - call it a hunch).
Your other option is to roll your fenders. This is done a lot in the more mature aftermarket followings of BMW, Audi, VW, Volvo (and just about any other marque). Basically you heat your paint with a hair dryer to soften it, then slowly fold in your fender lips to where they are almost vertical.

I currently have a 2007 S Type fitted with 8.5inch 20s on 245s all round and have the same rubbing issue with 4 people in the car and going over potholes etc. The rear fender/guard is rubbing the top of my rear tyres and I am looking into fender rolling and flaring in order to fix this problem and hopefully allow more room in the rear fenders so I can safely lower it.
