Talking 2000 Jaguar S-type 4.0 91,XXX miles with a few issues...please help!

Hello all,

I to am new to the forum and a proud owner of the 2000 Jaguar S-type which appears to be the most troublesome model to date...lol. I bought my car used with 91110 miles on it and so far have the following codes P1572 and P0420 which I know what they mean. I have ordered the part to fix the P1572 code and I believe I will replace the oxygen sensor on the (Bank 1) before I proceed to the more costly repairs of the cats. I am also experiencing a burning rubber like smell when the car is at a stop light or under close to idle speeds.

I have read forums about transfer cases heating up and I am not climbing any mountains so I hardly believe that would be my issue. And to top it all off I have just realized that my valve cover gaskets have small slow leaks. I also have a rear drivers window that (hopefully) is off the track and not needing a new regulator. I guess I should just realize that owning a Jaguar gets expensive and maintaining one is probably twice as much as maintaining a normal everyday car...at least it seems that way so far! I enjoy the ride, better than a Cadillac and a Jaguar just makes you feel more posh...I guess I would say.

Sorry for the long introduction!

What transfer case? Unless it's something by a name I don't recognise, there isn't one.

Be sure to find out if the (chain) tensioners have been replaced because you're on borrowed time if not.

There's a reason the early cars are cheap LOL
But great if you can keep on top of them...

Just get a new regulator. They don't go off track they break!!

No transfer case but do service the automatic transmission.

Since your new do a bunch of reading and look closely at the timing chain tensioner problem as JagV8 said. That will take the motor out real quick!!

Plan on changing both cam cover gaskets and all eight plug well seals. I would also change all eight coils and plugs. Unless you know they have been done already.

And finally get the JTIS and the JEPC. Both are free on this site. These are the factory manuals and are worth their weight in gold!!

That's a big +1 on the advice already given above, especially on the tensioners - best bet - change all the tensioners, chain guide rails to Generation 4 design and all gaskets as mentioned above.

I would also get the transmission serviced by a reputable shop...

abonano,

how much will all this cost roughly? I purchased the car as a second vehicle and I know that having Jaguar do the work is going to be costly but done correctly. Since the vehicle is obviously no longer under warranty can I go anywhere to get the work done or do I need to take it to Jaguar? I do not know of any reputable shops in my local area so I guess Jaguar it is...I should probably get the tensioners and valve covers done at the same time. What do you think?

Thank you and have a Merry Christmas!

Unless you can do the work yourself it's just not worth it. You should really check out what you are looking at before buying. All cars have their little tricks and the people that currently own them are the best source for this advice!

If you wanted an S Type you need to get a 2003 and up model. Too many problems with the older models to justify spending thousands of dollars to repair.

Or you can drive until the tensioners let go. The piston hits the valves and the engine is done.

Out of curiosity my car was registered in June 2002 and if not mistaken was told it was borderline of facelift. Does electric handbrake justify i have the newer model compared to the one you reckon are not worth buying ?

You are in better shape because the 6 cylinder cars don't have the timing tensioner problems like the V-8 does.

Your dash board should be much different if you have the Gen II model.

As clubairth1 already pointed out - the cost isn't justified unless you tackle this project yourself - Now, I'm not endorsing that approach by any account as this is not a simple DIY project!

First things first - you need to pull off one of the cam covers and inspect the secondary tensioner - if you see any orange plastic material - you have a Gen 1 plastic tensioner and you need to address quickly - same deal if you see any hairline cracks in the plastic. (You could have a gen 2 or 3 tensioner already in place and that would be a great thing)

Look to spend between $600 - $800 for all the timing parts you need and about $200 - $300 for associated gaskets, etc.

Some avid DIY'ers change the actual timing chains as well - it's not the chain that's the issue but the plastic tensioners and rail guides. Not buying the chains could save you a few bucks.

You will also need a timing service kit - some people "rent" them out on Ebay - again around $300 to rent but you get most of it back when returning.

If you go to an indy to get this work done - expect to spend around $2K - and that's somewhat conservative - changing out the tensioners and guide rails is very labor intensive.

Now the good news is once you get this completed - as long as you keep with regular oil changes, etc - you should be good to go.

A low budget approach would be to change out the secondary tensioners only using the "zip tie" method. Search the forum - just keep in mind any approach you take is subject to the overall condition of the engine - I would recommend figuring this out sooner than later... Good Luck...

A good well put post that IMO should be a sticky or in Fact section. Not to lambast older S-Types...prospective buyers can be educated before purchase. Some have money and/or mechanical skills and some don't.

Bee Vee - The 2.5 was only available from 2002.5MY so is the redesigned (not just a facelift) car. Manual box is 5 speed (gears), auto would be 6 gears, (+ reverse).

2002.5MY starts with VIN M45255

I guess there will be a few pre-production cars... no idea what VIN they may have!

I do not get it! All cars have issues some more than others and that is dependent on age, mileage and use and these cars want to be used. When you get a Jaguar you accept the fact that it is a high end car and with it is a price tag for repair as well. I would never tell anyone that they made a mistake if that is what they wanted and could afford. I would tell anyone that maintenance is an issue regardless of the year and this forum is proof of that!

I got some quotes on the overall cost to replace the tensioners and it is quite expensive... A reputable local shop is asking $1049.00 or higher and Jaguar wants even more obviously. Now here's the delema... Jaguar nor the local shop has never heard of this problem with the S-type...the jaguar serviceman has serviced jaguars in the St Louis and metro east area for over 13 years and said the XJ8 and other X type models had this issue but not the S-type.

Are they suggesting that the engine in the 2000 S-Type 4.0 is different than the XK8/R and the XJ8 and the tensioners are different? If I were you I would have at least one valve cover to see if it was done by the previous owner and at that time you will know if it needs to be done. I will provide a few links that should help to better understand the situation.

Your car is a 4.0 V8 correct?

Danger Will Robinson!!

It's a very well known problem so they either are lying to you or they are incompetent!

A well run independent shop would be the best bet but as you mentioned. This is an expensive and somewhat complicated repair. Make double sure you catch it in time if you plan to keep the car.
