Default 2000 S-type 4.0

Don't know why my first attempt didn't work so I will try again.......

I have a family owned 2000 s-type I don't care its not worth much and I want to get it running again. I need to know the best year that I can replace the blown engine in mine, only had 60K and hopefully use the existing transmission as it was rebuilt about 2K before the engine died. Its a mint garage kept car that was bought in SJ and was driven by my mom so it has sentimental value.

Regards,

Tony L

If you are willing to transfer ALL the AJ28 components to the 4.0 engine, you can use the basic block from any 4.0 V8.(AJ26 and AJ27)

The easiest would be to use the 2000-2002 4.0 AJ28 S-Type engine, but the basic blocks are all the same.

The heads and camshafts are different from some other 4.0 Jaguar engines.

I am running a 2002 S-Type 4.0 block with 2000 XJ8 heads, oil pan, accessory brackets etc. etc. etc. in my 2000MY XJ8.

If you find a 4.0 running engine with lower mileage, be sure to confirm that the engine has the later timing chain tensioners. If not, be sure to replace the engine timing chains/tensioners to the later generation kit. This problem caused the death of many a 4.0 engine.

Doesn't matter what its worth, its a car worth keeping, more so that it was your mums and certainly since you know its history and that its been garaged.
More style and nicer made than a lot of the latest rubbish out there.
What was wrong with the engine?

Was driving great, after a 30 mile high commute I stopped at the P/O, got back in it turned over but wouldnt start, no bad noise and turned over fast just didn't start, I thought it was fuel pump? Had not heard of the tensioner problem or I would have had it addressed. I had it towed to the local hick garage and they got it started and heard a big bang......I had it towed home. Pretty sure I have internal damage, drained the oil and got coolant and oil and I can only turn the engine 180 both ways before it stops....I'm in the process of taking it apart but stuff always gets in the way, its protected in a shed and it going to run again!
