Angry 2000 S-Type 4.0 celebrates Christmas with Dashboard Light Display

Well it’s almost Christmas and my 2000 S-Type 4.0 has decided to celebrate with more dashboard lights than my Christmas Tree. I’d like some advice with troubleshooting.

Here is what happened. I left the radio and interior light on over a weekend and drained the battery. I disconnected the battery, charged it, reinstalled it and the car started right up, but with the following MILs: Brake, ABS, and DSC. The following Messages: Fuel Computer Data Fault, the odometer reads all dashes as does the trip meter. The car drives with no ABS, but the Speedometer doesn’t work. Check engine light is not lit.

I bought a refurbished AutoEnginuity from the manufacturer scanner off Ebay (it is one generation older ST05 OBDII Rev 7C ) for $119 came with V11 CD and added the enhanced Jaguar features for $230 so I figure a pretty good deal for $350.

I ran the diagnostics and have the following:
Enhanced Powertrain: P0460 Fuel Level Sensor A circuit and P1233 Fuel System Disabled or Off Line
Instrument Cluster Control Module: U1262 (J1850) SCP Communication Bus Fault
Message Center Control Module: U1131 SCP (J1850) Invalid Or Missing Data for Fuel System and U1262 (J1850) SCP Communication Bus Fault

When I clear the codes the P0460, P1233, and U1132 go away, for a while, then return. The other codes come back immediately.

When I switch systems on the AutoEnginuity to the ABS the tool says it can’t communicate with the module. I checked the fuses and disconnected the ABS plug and check the pins for voltage and the module is getting power.

Based on the symptoms my best guess is the ABS module is toast. It would explain, I think, the ABS, DSC, Brake MILs and the Speedometer based on other research I’ve done on the forum. But, it doesn’t explain the Fuel Data and SCP Communications Fault. Is it possible that with the ABS module not communicating that it is affecting the SCP bus?

Anyone had similar experience and if so I would value your input before I spend money on replacing the ABS.

Thanks in advance.

The first thing I would do is try a different battery.
Although your symptoms are not the usual failing battery symptoms failing batteries are the prime suspect in weird electrical problems

You have received very good advice from police666. Follow it and report back with what you find.

Thanks, the battery is about 3 yrs old so makes sense to try that first. I'll try that over the weekend.

I replaced the battery but no change in symptoms except now the car won't start. Turns over but not start. I do have the P1233 but even after the ABS symptoms it would still start and drive even with the P1233. Now it won't start at all.

Default wont start...

If it wont start, but is cranking...try another key/fob. Sounds like the immobiliser is kicked in. Is the Alarm light flashing on the dash while cranking?

It also sounds somewhat like what happens with low voltage battery though like police666 said.

Could still be the battery, the system might not have the power to start up systems. Check your new battery also.

Also , 1233 says its fuel system shutoff ....maybe reset fuel system shutoff switch...isnt that in the truck? not sure..

The inertia switch is located where the handbook and other threads on here say & show.

P1233 is not "fuel system shutoff". See the codes PDF (free in stickies & JTIS) which show more detail but it's fuel pump/relay related. So it's not likely the inertia switch.

There is no separate immo in these cars. Wires are not coloured as described. Don't waste time going looking for the fault along the lines described in the above post.

If it's immobiliser-related, the PATS light (*) will be flashing codes. Is it?

(*) see below; top centre front of dash

With the known P code I doubt it's PATS but easy to check.

A quick update. I installed a used ABS/DSC module and that cleared everything but the P1233 and the fact it won't start. I checked the immobilizer in the driver's kick panel and it is fine. I guess I'll start with the basics, fuel or spark. Anyone know how to pull off the rear seat to get to the fuel pump? I check all the fuses and swapped the relay for the fuel pump and there is 12.6 V at the fuse.

Also, the car not starting occurred the morning after I started the car, moved it about 5 feet to pull it all the way into the garage. I saw a couple of threads about 'bore wash' on the 4.0 V8s. Is that a possibility?

Thanks to everyone for their help - this is a great forum!

Yes, bore wash is definitely a possibility. Detailed threads if not on here then on the UK forum.

Can sound like extra-fast cranking due to lack of compression.

Rear seat hinges, I think you may have to push in catches and lift it.

Yes, it cranks like no compression. Also, no PATS codes.

Default immo...

Found the SEPERATE immobilizer unit in drivers kick panel....there is a SEPERATE unit, wonder if I can program these the way I used to when I installed them for all the dealerships in Florida, New York and New Jersey....hmmmm, ill do some homework. I don't see why I wouldn't be able to.

It was bore wash. I never could get it to start. i checked i was getting fuel and pulled a plug and verified i had spark. i just did one side and pulled all the plugs put some oil in each cylinder. Instant compression. I had to charge up the battery again to start it. It started right up but with a lot of smoke -- so i am real popular in my neighborhood right now.

So, everything is working. I spent $149 on a used ABS/DSC unit to solve the original problem.

Thanks again everyone for your help.l
