Default 2000 S-Type - Advice welcome

Hello from NC. New to the forum and Jag family. The car had been sitting in a coworker's garage for a year and the interior and exterior were in pretty good condition, so I took it off her hands. My co-worker's son opted to begin driving his girlfriend's car and only mentioned that it had a brand new battery and used to ride smoothly with only a 'loud' sound, maybe coming from the muffler? After having the old fuel drained and new fuel added, it was discovered that the fuel pump needed to be replaced. The FP was replaced, but there is white smoke coming from the exhaust. The mechanic is not certain what's causing it. Although the car runs, it really can't be driven as it seems the engine sputters and is sluggish when I try to move the car. (I recognize these are not technical terms.) Any suggestions??

Did you change the fuel filter in conjunction with the pump replacement? The filter is a Ford part and is located at the back side of the left front (US driver's side) wheel well under the plastic splash panel.

Thanks. I am not sure if the filter itself was replaced at the same time as the fuel pump. I will check.

Check the fuel pressure at the injector rail, using a mechanical gauge. This will give you an idea if the new pump is operating correctly (no guarantees) or if the filter is partially clogged.

It doesn't look like the fuel filter was replaced.

The car may need a general clean and tune. V8 or V6? Supercharged or regular? mileage? Why was it parked a whole year? Was it broken down? Need some details on this one.
