Question 2000 S-Type Catalytic Converter Replacement (P0420)

Hey all,

Quick question. I know.... I should read through ALL the threads first and I've looked at a few but I'm too busy at the moment to continue.

I've had a P0420 code go off and on over the past few months, pretty sure it's the Cat (horrible misfiring last year, and yes it's been fixed, Nice thread below) and I have emissions coming up so I need to deal with this.

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...-4-0-a-113565/

My question is this - Can I do just one, or do I need to do both? I WILL NOT be using OEM, not for that kind of money. Instead I'm going to take it to a local shop and he's going to do a cut & weld job for $275.00 for one or $500.00 (US) for both, which seems fair to me, plus I'm no welder.... Much cheaper than ~ $1,500.00 LOL.

He will be using an AP Exhaust Cat, part #608204.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Well what does the code tell you?
It should indicate which side is the problem.

It's bank one, which I believe is 1-4, therefore the passenger side. But that wasn't my question.

I asked, "My question is this - Can I do just one, or do I need to do both?"

To clarify - would there be any reason that I would want to replace both at the SAME TIME, or would just doing the one be sufficient and not cause any performance issues? I would have 1 OEM and 1 aftermarket. Basically, the guy is suggesting I do both because of a potential performance issue of doing just 1, but only 1 is bad.

I'm not a professional mechanic, I can do enough but don't have all of the answers! So please, let me know your thoughts. Thanks again!

With today's aftermarket support, there is no reason to do a cut and weld job. Direct fit converters are available for your car through www.rockauto.com.

I don't know from the post if you have a V6 or V8, but here are the prices:

V6

Eastern Brand - LH Direct Fit $188.79
Eastern Brand - RH Direct Fit $187.79

V8

Eastern Brand - LH Direct Fit $181.79
Eastern Brand - RH Direct Fit $171.79

These bolt right up and DONE!

Thumbs up

Hey Tony,

Thanks for the reply, I may actually go that route. After shipping and tax I'd save about $60.00, but then have to do it myself. Doesn't look that complicated. Didn't really even think of that route because with other vehicles in the past I've only had Cat's replaced with a weld job. Silly me!

Still wondering though - if there are any advantages/disadvantages to ONLY doing one side? Doesn't appear to be, but like to be thorough when I'm working on her.

**4.0L V8 BTW

I would recommend, without reservation, that you replace both. In your climate, you probably don't have a heavily rusted car and if you use PB Blaster on the bolts, they will come off pretty easily. Here in Alabama, a little PB Blaster is all it takes. Bolt on, bolt off.

If bad misfires were one side I'd just do one. If bad misfires were both sides I might do both or I might do just the one that's flagged bad. With rust, labour rates & parts prices here I'd be more likely to do the one.

Look you could change your entire car out in case of "potential" failures.

Follow the code and replace what is needed. No more. If the other side cat needs replacing you will get a code telling you that.

I don't fix things that are not broken. What's the point?

Using your logic, why do an oil change? It still runs?

Wink Found OEM on Ebay..... Smokin Deal

Just thought I'd share that I finally got around to replacing this last month (Wasn't hurting performance, just throwing codes..... that I kept erasing), so yea it took me a while! But no more codes, so that's a plus!
When I started to look into the replacement again I stumbled across exactly what I needed on eBay.... For $230.00 (with shipping), Brand New OEM Part.

Jaguar s Type Catalytic Convertor XR8 1126 New OE Part 00 01 Vin Specific Part | eBay

Smokin Deal! If you're looking for a part, it doesn't hurt to check eBay.....

That's all I have to report at this time
