2000 S type:engine light came on and then car would not start

It depends on which code reader you have. You can reset codes with all three.
I have an elm 327 which I use to quickly check engine codes when I am driving.
I also have a icarsoft i930 which I use to read codes like ABS etc but I don't know if it will deal with the CATS.
Finally an not least I have for the final resort a copy of the SDD/IDS program with a mongoose pro. This works on everything on this car because it was the official Jaguar program.
It all depends on what the car warning lights are telling me to which code reader I use.
I don't know how much you have experience with computers but it would probably be the easiest way out of this problem to go to an indie and have then reprogram the car This would remove the irritating CATS warning that if I remember correctly you don't have fitted.

David,
I have an elm 327 with the identification KMOON OBDII [MINI], that says it supports all OBDII protocols. It belongs to a friend of mine who also owns an Android phone. He was unable to get it to read anything the one time we tried to use it. Could you supply the information on that free trial diagnostic program? Perhaps if you sent it to my email address I could simply forward it to him.

I will read the codes but not reset them until you buy it but try it first.
then when downloaded
go to connection
connect your elm either by bluetooth WiFi or usb,
then go diagnostic. And let it run.
If your friend has a laptop go here and download a free copy either for Windows or Apple

Ya, I hear you.
Most basic codes readers see only the 'powertrain' codes, typically Pxxxx, where the 'x's are digits. Those are the ones that turn the CEL on. Every code reader I've seen can erase the codes and turn the light off, but of course the light will come back on if the fault reoccurs.
I think BC got rid of their smog testing program (very wisely) but driving around with a CEL on is annoying and can potentially damage the car.
You'll need a more sophisticated reader for codes other than for powertrain.
