2000 S Type headliner sagging slightly. replacement required?
The headliner on my 2000 SType has just broken away from where it adjoins the top of the rear window. It has fallen about two to three inches at the centre and the whole visible sag is about a foot and a half.
There are no other sags and the headliner is in good condition.
Local auto upholstery shops say I have to replace the entire headliner and I received a quote of $640CAN/490USA to do the job. Is there an alternative?
I will try to attach a picture.

These two threads should help:

Resist the temptation to reglue the fabric to the foam backer. It doesn't last. See post #9 in the thread above for my experience.

I agree with the comments above.
Re-placement of the material is the only way to sort this out. It is the foam backing that has perished.
To get the head lining out you need to remove the front passenger seat.It then comes out through the back door.
Because of the shape it is best to get an auto upholstery shop to re-cover it.
Removing and re-fitting yourself may well save a lot of cash.

Many thanks to all who replied,, especially to Karl. I followed your links and found WLS Headliners and they will sell me a kit [excluding headboard] for $60US. With shipping this would probably work out to between a hundred and a hundred fifty Canadian.
I contacted a local friend of mine who does boat covers for a living and he has advised that he can staple the sag. Unlike the sags I have seen in the links you provided, mine is confined to this small area above the rear window. I will post a picture of the repair once it is complete. But I do recognize that if the foam backing is the issue then it will continue to give away and that I might have to get a replacement headliner. I asked WLS if they had any advice on what to do with the foam backing on the headboard but they did not reply to the question. If I get to this stage of events I will follow the steps provided and remove the passenger seat and the headliner and at that point I will take it to a professional to have it covered. I take it that the foam backing would have to be removed and replaced. Do I have that right?

The following link may help you out. Trim any fabric where the moonroof slides into it's tracks. The new foam and fabric will fit in tracks but will hang up and bind. I believe my sister and I usedused brushes the welding type with the wooden handle, to remove the foam that was adhered to the backer board.

My boat cover friend stapled the back of the droop using staples that do not rust and the result is quite good. If you look closely you can see a small droop but it is easy to live with because for the most part it is invisible. If it gets worse I will then have to go forward with other courses of action. It only cost me a beer at the local pub!
I will keep my fingers crossed for the time being.
I have used Super 77 in the past and it is very good stuff.
Thanks to all for your input. Much appreciated.
